Answer

There are quite a few things that could cause dark circles. Sometimes it’s genetic. Most often it is as a result of having poor lymphatic drainage and poor circulationn around the eye area. It can be as a results of stress and poor sleeping habits, which will results in poor drainage. It can be due to injury. It can be due to other systemic issues such as poor kidney function. It can even be due to having very high cheek bones and deep set eyes, causing a "shadow" look around the eyes and making it look like you have dark circles and tired eyes. There are a few things we can do. Provided the dark circles are not there because of illness or a systemic problem, we can place filler under the eyes. Giving the under eye area a little volume very often sorts this problem out. Alternatively, we can look at treatment options to strengthen the skin and improve drainage and circulation (such as carboxy and laser therapy). We can also look at the use of active products specifically made for these problems, such as Skin Medica’s Dermal Eye Repair. Most often, patients who do a combination of al of these have the very best, longest lasting results. Just remember, the eye area is very thin and very fragile and so it needs special care. This is also the very first area we normally see the signs of ageing, because it is so thin and fragile. If you’d like us to help you to see what would be the best course of action, please visit your nearest Skin Renewal branch, and let me or one of our other Doctors take a look and give you the best advice.

Question

Hi Dr Maureen,

I’m in my mid 40s and generally have a very dry skin. I get small, hard white pimples around the area below the sides of my mouth. While I follow a good cleansing routine, they don’t ever really clear up. I’m concerned that there may be a hormonal cause as they do get worse certain times of the month. Any advice?
Thanks, Sunette

From Masoodah Ebrahim

Question

I’ve been suffering from acne my entire teen and tween years, at some point in my teens it got to a state whereby it was classified as severe acne and put on a very strong dosage of Roacuttane… thankfully it’s cleared with normal breakouts when it’s that time of the month. My main issue is I can never find a product that agrees with my skin or that actually clears up the oiliness and dry patches. Is there a skin care regiment that I can follow or a product that can help? PS: I’m exceptionally hairy as well and low threshold for pain.
