Question: Is aluminium dangerous?

Dear Doctor, what is your view on aluminium in deodorants? I have never been too concerned about it, but now that it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month is here I've read that it can cause breast cancer.

Answer

Thank you for your question, reader. There is a history of controversy around aluminium exposure and breast cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. No definitive proof exists that aluminium plays a specific role in the development of these conditions. The aluminium content of an antiperspirant is very low and the absorption through the skin is even lower. One is more likely to be exposed to higher levels through daily food consumption. It is more important to focus on avoiding hormone additives to meat and milk wherever possible.
