Question

Hi Lisa!

I’m so glad I found you on this site to ask you something. I’m a 15 year old girl. I weigh almost 100kgs – yes this is quite embarrassing as I always was a chubby kid from a young age… I have tried to lose weight by taking some diet pills and I did! I lost 30kgs in 1 year!! But eversince I left the diet pills I gained everything back. For a year now I’ve been trying to eat healthy and eat 6 times per day but in small portions. That doesn’t seem to help at all! Is there anything you could recommend fo

Answer

Hi there Nazmeera, I’m sorry to hear about your struggle! Whilst the diet pills may have worked temporarily, anything that tries to replace healthy eating and regular exercise is unfortunately a quick fix and is not going to help you long term. What you need is a lifestyle change, where you are committed to regular exercise each week and a semi-structured eating plan. That doesn’t mean you can’t factor in a few cheats here and there! Small, healthy portions sound like a good idea, provided these are not more than your recommended daily intake of calories. Your exercise plan needs to include some cardio every day (it’s hard, but a few sprints within each session will really help you burn fat). Then, you need to practice strength training, at least twice a week. You are not going to lose weight healthily without plenty of exercise! Don’t be scared of weights – they are a vital component of shaping up. You may find exercise to be a struggle in the beginning if you are not used to it, but stick it out! You will soon be amazed at how energized you feel and how ready you are for your next exercise session. Have a look at my website www.lisaraleigh.co.za, where you will find plenty of assistance and examples underneath ‘eating plans’ and ‘training programmes’. Fitness DVDs are also one of my favourite ways to get fit, as they do all the thinking for you! Good luck!

Question

Good morning Lisa, I just kicked into the habit of exercising (it’s my second consecutive week at the gym) all is going well my fitness is building up gradually but sometimes if I go in real hard I feel nauseous. What is the cause? Could it be my diet? Yesterday the last meal I had was a piece of steak, green salad and sweet potato ( also had a packet of popcorn later) but I had to throw up, also it was not lactic acid.

Body resistance training vs. weight training

Question

HI Lisa,

I have recently come across some articles that say body weight exercises/training yield better fitness results than when using equipment such as dumbbells, kettle bells and the like. With all this information bombarding us in regards to what yields better results, what the latest craze/trend in fitness is and the like, would you recommend that incorporating aspects of these different trends into your exercise routine would probably be the best option?
