Question: To Exfoliate Or Not Exfoliate

I have a friend who exfoliates every day. Is this good for one's skin or do we lose a lot of young cells?

Answer

Exfoliting is very beneficial for your skin’s health, in terms of removing dead skin cells and promoting cellular turn over for heathly new skin cells to ,move to the skins surface; givng you a healthy and radiant looking skin. Depending on the type of exfoliator being used, (for example if you are exfoliationg by menas of an AHA toner or a mild enzyme exfoliator), it should be safe to exfoliate everday. Granular  exfoliators and very active enzymes, should only be done twice a week, depending on your skin type and conditon (dehydrated, sensitive, aging skin) . When exfoiliating, only the surface layer of the epidermis (the stratum corneum) should be remove. There are various options of exfoliation, ranging from chemical peels (in salon treatment), to granular or ‘chemical’ homecare products (such as AHA’s or enzymes). Good examples of very active home care exfoliators include; Lamelle- Cathepzyme 1 and 2, Skin Medica-skin polisher, Skin Ceuticals-Retexturing Activator.
