How to: Get Laverne Cox’s voluminous curls

Laverne-Cox

Glamour magazine recently named transgender actress, Laverne Cox, “Woman of the Year” and we cannot think of a better choice! After making history earlier in 2014 for being the first transgender actress to receive an Emmy nomination, Laverne went on to be the first transgender woman to ever cover Time magazine. If that’s not enough, she also nails every read carpet she steps on. Step aside Beyoncé, we have new hair inspiration on the red carpet!

One of our favourite looks we’ve seen Laverne wear on the red carpet is big volume curls. Paired with a centre parting, this look perfectly frames Laverne’s face shape and looks down right stunning! Do you love this look as much as we do? Follow our five-step guide to recreate these voluminous curls:

Step 1: Work a heat protection spray through damp hair and blow-dry hair into a middle path. Rather than roughly drying the hair, divide the hair into sections and blow-dry it using a round hairbrush. This will provide your hair with added volume and ensure it remains smooth and free of frizz.

Step 2: Once dry, divide your hair into sections of plus-minus 5cm to create even curls. Using either a curling wand or straightening iron, create each curl. After curling each section, hold the curl close to the scalp until cooled before letting them drop. This will ensure that your curls last longer. Once all of your hair is curled, finish it off with a light hold hairspray to keep the curls volumous.

Step 3: To loosen your curls, lightly run your fingers through them. If you use a hairbrush, be sure to use a light hand to so as not to loosen your curls too much.

  1. I love the curls but you need the correct style tool depending on your hair. My hair is straight and the only thing that has worked for me is a curl wand, not the tong that grabs your hair but rather the one that you wrap your own hair around. Curls have never lasted in my hair but when I used the wand, my hair lasted 3 days and might have lasted longer if I didn’t have to wash it :-)
