4 scents to try for Autumn

Wednesday, 26 April 2017

There are no hard and fast rules about what you must spritz on in colder months and what you should avoid. Just because your all-time favourite fragrance is a limited edition summer spray, it certainly doesn’t mean you can’t rock it in winter too.

Fragrance wearing is about mood mostly and of course, personal choice. If you like the way something smells, then wear it. But if you’re looking to update your cold weather scent wardrobe, here’s a little fragrant inspiration.

Missoni Eau de Toilette, R1 255 (100ml), R985 (50ml) and R705 (30ml)

Who can resist a piece of a hot fashion label to bring some cheer to a grey day? The fragrance, like their knitwear designs and patterns, is bold – we love the bottle with its play of warm, sunny colours that blend seamlessly. And when there’s not a flower in sight, you’ll smell blooming marvellous: think ruby-rich juices of blood orange and rosehip, with gentle middle notes of freesia and peony laced with heliotrope and spicy cedarwood.

YSL Black Opium Floral Shock Eau de Parfum, R1 630 (90ml) and R1 245 (50ml)

Winter is a great season to re-visit an adored classic or pay homage to a scent of a bygone age. If your mum or grandmother wore it, it’s likely to be boldly feminine enough for the cooler weather. YSL Opium has been around since 1977, so why not try a modern take on this classic fragrance. We love the dark glitter encrusted glass bottle. The luminous pink liquid juice that shines through is very glamorous too: it hits like a burst of fragrant flowers (freesia, bergamot, and pear), cold as the morning dew, hard-hitting like that first jolt of espresso when you first wake up. With middle notes of coffee and base noted of white musk like the best-seller Opium, it’s a shot of sensuality bottled, that’ll ensure you steal the show.

Chloe Love Story Eau Sensuelle Parfum, R1 655 (75ml), R1 370 (50ml) and R935 (30ml)

We love a good story, especially one inspired by Parisian romance and the tale behind this vibrant scent is that it’s inspired by the love padlocks on the iconic bridge of Pont des Arts. Thousands of padlocks were attached to the famous bridge to symbolise love stories from all over the world. These padlocks inspired the Chloé Love Story bottle’s original design, a sculpture of glass and metal with a distinctive pleated effect. Extremely sensual, this fragrance from Chloe teases your senses with strong hints of orange blossom, mixed with the vanilla character of heliotrope and a smooth sandalwood touch. A spritz of this and who knows, your blooming romance could unfold one cold wintery night?

Elizabeth Arden White Tea Eau de Toilette Spray, R695 (100ml), R595 (50ml) and R495 (30ml)

You certainly can wear white in winter and this is why: Elizabeth Arden White Tea is inspired by the simple pleasure that accompanies the first sip of tea. White Tea is a crisp, blissful new addition to the Elizabeth Arden fragrance portfolio. The perfect escape for your senses, it is an invitation to indulge in warm memories and delight in the white tea vapours, missing blue skies, and cotton-like clouds. And the other fragrant ingredients make it a real joy to wear: think mandarin, sage essence and Japanese white fern to name a few. This is an exquisite fragrance yet very uncomplicated, perfect for days when you’re wearing a fiercely tailored coat with leather boots.

I’m obsessed with fragrances. I’m always on the next one to try. I tend to change fragrance every season. This autumn I’m thinking of trying the Chloe version and see how it goes. Hope to like it, bonus is the fact that it is not expensive.

Black Opium is my favourite. I suffer from sinusitis and I’m very picky when it comes to fragrances, so this one has stood the test of time.
