Granted the baby blue bottle of Thierry Mugler’s Angel was deemed odd for its day. But then that’s the thing about Angel – it is a little odd (well, it certainly was when it was launched in 1992). Ultimately though, like many things that seem a bit different, its distinction is what sets it apart. Angel is out there. It’s flamboyant, yet brilliant. As fragrance guru and co-author of Perfumes, Luca Turin says, ‘Don’t fuss with pretenders. Buy the perverse, brilliant, original, but wear it only if you know how to tell the joke properly.’ The joke he’s referring to is its exciting mix of masculine and feminine. And for those who think that Angel is merely a gourmand goodie that’s packed with all things edible, think again: it’s expertly composed of woody patchouli, blackcurrant and white florals, delivering a strong fragrance that’s certainly not for the faint hearted. Those who’ve worn it for years never tire of it. Oh, and it’s also refillable. This green cred immediately ups Angel’s cool stakes even further. If you’re looking for a fragrance icon – Angel is your answer in a market saturated with safe and ‘samey’ scents.
