If you’ve found yourself asking, “Do I need a different fragrance for every season,” the answer, is well, no. “I have a thing for Diorissimo when it snows. If changing seasons are your excuse for buying lots of fragrances, don’t let us stop you,” writes perfume expert Tania Sanchez, author of Perfumes, The Guide. She says you should never feel duty-bound to stop wearing fruity florals in the middle of winter. Her point? If you like the way something smells, wear it.
And if you’d like to treat yourself to a bottle of something delicious to ring in the cold weather, then do that too. We suggest wearing warmer fragrances this time of year, and by that we mean scents with warm, comforting notes such as rose, vanilla, cinnamon and cloves.
So what’s on our shopping list this winter?
The One Desire by Dolce and Gabbana EDP (R1 300 for 75ml)
We all know the need for comfort food in the chill of winter. Why not look for a little indulgence in your fragrance too? This newbie from Dolce and Gabbana’s successful The One collection is laced with scents of caramel to give it an irresistible sweetness. Add to that tuberose, vanilla, sandalwood and musk, and you have a perfume made for winter!
Jo Malone Red Roses Cologne (R 1 050 for 100ml)
You can’t beat a hit of rose in winter, but if you don’t want to smell like a rose garden, try this fresh scent. Added notes of crushed violet as well as hints of lemon and spearmint come together in this luxurious floral scent. We recommend you wear it on icy winter days (best spent fireside, cup of tea in hand).
5th Avenue NYC by Elizabeth Arden EDT (R365 for 75ml)
This elegant fruity floral has all the right notes in its drydown (the scent that lingers on your skin) to boost feelings of comfort and warmth. Close your eyes and imagine a combo of vanilla bean, tonka bean, velvet musk, sandalwood and golden amber. Yummy, right? But it’s not just the warm notes that have us going gaga; we also love the clever mix of fruits and florals that make this fragrance extremely feminine and easy to wear. Think a cockatil of bergamot, succulent Peach and Golden Delicious apple in the top notes (so you get an instant hit of fruit) and an appealing mix of black currant, night-blooming Jasmine, sparkling Peony and plum blossom in the heart of the scent.
