7 budget-friendly masks for every hair type

Thursday, 22 June 2017

Is your hair in need of some serious TLC? It’s a resounding ‘Yes’ from us. Thanks, winter!

The truth is, simply just conditioning your hair isn’t enough during the colder months. Aside from making your skin dry, the winter chill strips your hair of moisture and leaves it looking dull and lackluster. You’ll probably also be more inclined to heat-style (because it’s way too cold to consider the alternative), so it’s time to get into repair-mode and invest in a good mask.

Masks contain extra nourishing ingredients aimed at restructuring and repairing damage. And while we all wish our beauty budget was unlimited, it’s not always the case. Try these masks aimed at tackling your hair woes, without breaking the bank.

Hair profile: Fine, fragile and brittle hair

The mask: L’Oreal Paris EverStrong Strengthening Mask, R179,95

How it works: A favourite among beauties, and slightly more of a splurge, but we can’t deny the results. This formula works to strengthen hair fibres, while leaving it softer and shinier. Packed with botanical oils, this mask works to nourish fragile and brittle hair.

Hair profile: Colour-treated hair

The mask: Pantene Pro-V Damage Rescue Mask for Coloured Hair, R74,95

How it works: If you love experimenting with colour, but hate the effects on your hair, a good mask and some TLC is all you need. This 2-minute colour damage rescue mask works to repair coloured or highlighted hair, leaving it smoother and healthier.

Hair profile: Curly hair

The mask: The Curl Company Curl Deep Conditioning Curl Masque, 199,95

How it works: Perfect for curly locks, this mask contains the unique professional ingredient, CURLPLEX. It’s a blend of moringa oil and meadowfoam seed oil formulated to enhance and define your curls and waves.

Hair profile: Fine hair lacking shine, in need of a treatment

The mask: Dove Intensive Repair Mask, R80,95

How it work: A brand well-loved for its skincare benefits, and they just so happen to be experts at hair care too. Treat your locks to this nourishing formula packed with micro-moisture serum and fibre actives that work to penetrate deep into the hair follicle and repair it from root to tip. Your hair is also left up to 10 times more resilient against future damage and you’ll love the added shine.

Hair profile: Natural hair

The mask: Amla Legend Replenishing Hair Mask, R39,95

How it works: Rich in Indian amla oil, this mask offers an intense conditioning treatment. Strengthen your hair and leave it feeling deeply cared for thanks to the powerful formula.

Hair profile: Dry, damaged hair

The mask: Aunt Jackie’s Intensive Repair Conditioning Masque, 127,95

How it works: Rescue brittle, damaged and dry hair with a repairing formulation that’s rich in Omega fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins. This mask contains flaxseed oil, mango butter, shea butter, and avocado and coconut oils. The formula works to restore your hair’s vitality, resilience and shine. It also comes in a huge tub, so you can lather on.

Hair profile: Unruly locks in need of a protein fix

The mask: TRESemme Keratin Smooth Keratin Deep Treatment Masque, R87,95

How it works: Hair often craves protein, more than hydration to be healthy, as there is around 4 to 7% of moisture in the hair follicle. This mask contains a keratin-rich formula that works to transform ‘unruly’, dry and damaged hair, leaving it smoother and easier to style. The added dose of keratin helps combat the dreaded frizz.

Ultimately, finding the perfect product for your hair type and needs may be a process, but we hope these mega masks will do the trick. There’s a host of other masks out there, including Cantu who offer a great variety of restorative products. If we’ve missed your favourites, feel free to share it with us.

I always but my niece Aunty Jackies products,it’s sulphate free and so gentle on the scalp. I would recommend it for any hair type. Tresemme however is my personal favourite, always leaves my hair so smooth and shiny.

I really need to get into the habit of masking my hair. I did an ombre last year and even with the olaplex my hair was really stripped and pushed too far.

I used the Dove Intensive Repair and it really does work. It left my hair feeling soft and silky smooth. If you use a lot of heat such as blow dryers and hair irons then try using this once a week to avoid extensive damage to your hair.

I am a huge fan of Aunty Jackie’s hair products. I decided to cut my hair last year and I had tried a number of “afro freindly” or ethnic hair products and that was a mission. It’s actually funny how I discovered this gem (Aunty Jackie’s), I was literally taking anything I hadn’t tried withing my affordability. Try it.

Aunt Jackie’s has been a life saver for my hair especially now during the harsh winter months with no protective style I thought by now my hair would be a big mess but to my surprise, it’s the healthiest it has ever been not to mention I have more volume now. I haven’t particularly used the Repair conditioning masque as yet, the products I’m currently using are the “seal it up hydrating butter and the Half & half hydrating silkening hair milk” both of these products seal in moisture and prevent my hair from drying.
