A new season, a fresh start and a chance to experiment with new trends. What better than to try out some fun new nail polish? Shorter nails are the popular choice this season – sorry Rihanna, these shades make an effortless statement without the dramatic nail shapes.
Pops of colour
You may consider blending in, but the reason we love nail polish is it gives you an opportunity to play around with colour and really make a statement. Think punchy bright shades that pop. These are also perfect for colour-blocking, because why wear one bright colour when you can wear three? This colourful tribute to ‘80s glam will no doubt set the tone – apparently, girls just wanna have fun.
Try: 3INA The Nail Polish in shade 149, R99,95; essence the gel nail polish 38 Love is in the Air, R26,95; ORLY Color Blast in Teal Cream, R119,90.
To ease you into autumn, neutrals, brown and especially greys are huge. They match any outfit and are a good way to play it safe while staying on trend. Elegant, almond-shaped nails look great in these shades.
Try: Morgan Taylor Professional Nail Lacquer in Rule the Runway from the Sweetheart Squadron Collection, R149; LOVinity Long Lasting Nail Lacquer in Coffee Compassion, R114,95; Wet n Wild Megalast Salon Nail Colour in Wet Cement, R69,95.
Textured top coat
Change-up your mani with a textured finish. You can stick to your go-to shades but switch it up with a top coat that slightly – or not so slightly, depending on your mood – changes up your look. We love the Morgan Taylor Beauty and the Beast collection, Enchanted Patina. While the tribute to the classic Disney movie caught our attention initially, we’re slightly obsessed after trying this gel polish. It creates a beautifully bronzed antique appearance and made us feel super glam. The transformative lacquer changes the appearance of the range of six colours, creating an eye-catching texture.
Creating nail art is always a challenge, but fun nonetheless. We had loads of fun playing around with the LCN, Agent Divalicious. Great for a clear option with a pop of colour, or applying over a base colour for some added drama.
Try: Morgan Taylor Professional Nail Lacquer in Enchanted Patina from the Beauty and the Beast Collection, R149; LCN Nail Polish in Agent Divalicious, R125; Sorbet Glam Effect in Metal Down, R90.
Ditch the gloom and play around with some subtle tones. This also allows your inner unicorn to shine through, so you have an excuse to keep all things pink and purple, even when the leaves are turning brown.
Try: Essie Nail Lacquer in Turquoise & Caicos, R134,95; essence the gel nail polish in 21 Whisper of Spring, R29,95; Morgan Taylor Professional Nail Lacquer in Perfect Landing, R149.
It was all over Kanye West’s 2017 collection, and if the previous beige obsession he created is anything to go by, this colour will be doing the rounds this season. From mauve to burgundy or ‘marsala’ as it was dubbed, this colour variety looks stylish and complements autumn style trends well.
Try: CATRICE Ultimate Nail Lacquer in Mauve to the Beat, R54,95, Essie Nail Lacquer in Lady Like, R134,95; CATRICE Ultimate Nail Lacquer in Take a Brick, R54,95
Metallic and glitter accents
Don’t let any season dull your sparkle. When all fails, add more glitter. Sparkly nail polish is a great way to feel glam. Opt for full-on sparkles or one accent nail to elevate your mani. Some varieties might be difficult to remove, so a good quality polish is always best.
Try: SpaRitual Nail Lacquer in Ha Ha, R395; imPress Gel Manicure Press-On Nails, R 175, LCN Nail Polish in Agent Fine Sensation, R125.
Glitter polish is great, removing it, not so great. Just like you would remove gel nails with tin foil, do the same here. Dip a cotton pad in acetone and place it on your nails. Cover each nail with tin foil and wait for about 5 minutes before removing. You will be surprised by how easily it lifts.
Lastly, chrome nails are huge. Read all about that here if you haven’t already.
