Get out of that hair rut

Get out of that hair rut 1
Are you a ponytail kind of girl? Or do you always leave your hair loose because, well, you just don’t know what else to do with it? Whatever your go-to style, it’s easy to get into a rut with your hair, but it’s just as easy to shake things up a bit by trying a new look.

Here are a few easy hair tips and styles you’ve probably tried before – we just thought we’d give you a friendly reminder to switch things up. What are beauty besties for?

Colour me beautiful

We’ve seen it in the movies, the easiest way to change up your look is to switch up the colour. No need to go to a seedy bathroom and go pitch black though. With a variety of colours to choose from, and an array of techniques, this might be your best bet. Simply book an appointment with your hairdresser, or do an at-home dye job. Depending on what you’re comfortable with. Here’s some awesome hair-spiration.

The fringe

Bangs are a surefire way to update your look with a simple snip and hint of retro hair inspiration. If you’ve never had the nerve to cut a fringe, chat to your hairdresser. Why not step out of your comfort zone? A fringe, worn just below the brow can be side-swept, choppy and chic, or worn full frontal.  And on those days when it gets too much, just clip it back. Be sure to apply ample product during winter to prevent any hair-raising surprises. Mince much?

Plait it

Effortlessly glamorous, and perfect for any occasion, the classic plait is always a good idea. Throw your hair to one side and create a loose plait, or go structured and neat with a fish plait. You can also add a few accessories for a bit of drama. If you’re always throwing your hair into a plait and heading on your way, you might want to steer clear and try something else. Depending on your texture, you could also apply product and plait it at night and loosen in the morning for soft waves.

Top knot

Hide second-day hair by piling it all on top of your head in a top knot. Fling your head upside down and secure it in a high pony on top of your head. Then twist and wrap it around itself and secure with another hairband. Voilà! Easy and out of the way.

Dry shampoo

Are you an everyday washer? Many experts say that daily shampooing can strip your hair of natural oils, especially if you are rocking a cute, curly ‘fro or hair that tends to dry out easily. So what’s a girl to do when her bouncy hair turns limp? Luckily there’s lots of products out there geared at your hair dramas. Dry shampoo in between washes makes your look last longer without stripping it. Spray it on dry hair and wait a few minutes before styling.

Alternatively, you could try the ‘wet look’. We have mixed opinions on this product drenched look, but it looked pretty fierce on the likes of Rihanna and Kendal Jenner.

Short and funky

If your short ‘do is always worn sleek and straight, spice it up with a cute hair accessory. Run mousse through damp hair and flip your head over while blasting with a hair dryer. Tousle it with your fingers and give it some body. Tease the back to prevent it from falling flat.

Change your parting

Even though Kim K is making the middle path tres chic, if you’ve been sporting the look for ages, you might want to switch things up. The exaggerated side parting is such an easy way to change your look, without making too much of a commitment. Use a comb and your fingers to carve a new parting on your chosen side and sweep hair over, brushing through the ends with your fingers to avoid knots, but maintain that tousled look. It’ll probably hang in your eyes a bit, but that’s all part of the “no effort went into this” effect. Add a little hairspray along the parting to keep it in place. You could also tie some of the top layer up, for a youthful and fuss-free change-up.

Wig out

Ah, the wig. We love how you can just switch up your look in seconds. The key is to find one that actually suits your face, but don’t be too intimidated. You’ll be surprised how many celebs are rocking wigs. Alternatively, if you’re not averse to the weave, it could be the perfect time to experiment with a new style. New hair, who “dis”?
