How to care for coloured hair brought to you by Revlon

Freshly coloured hair looks shiny, healthy and vibrant, and does wonders for one’s confidence. But anyone who colours their hair knows that the vibrancy doesn’t always last as long as you want it to. Don’t despair though, as there are a couple of things you can do to prolong the intensity of your colour. We’ve compiled six tips to help you keep your coloured hair looking fresh, nourished and – very importantly – vibrant.

1. Use a colour-friendly shampoo and conditioner
Colour protecting products are becoming more and more popular, and with good reason! They contain ingredients that help lock in your colour and many of them contain anti-fade technology.

2. Don’t soak your hair in water unnecessarily
Yes, your hair gets wet when you wash it, but if it’s been coloured, be sure to turn the tap off as soon as all the conditioner has been rinsed out. Hair dye strips the outermost lipid layer of the hair, which makes the strand more porous. When you wash it, it absorbs and releases water more easily, taking colour molecules with it during this process.

3. Don’t wash your hair every day
The more you wash your hair, the quicker the colour will fade. Try to limit washing to twice or three times a week and refresh with dry shampoo when needed.

4. Use cold or lukewarm water when washing your hair
Hot water opens the hair cuticle, and in the process, it allows colour pigment to seep out. Rinsing with lukewarm water prevents this, and gives added shine too.

5. Condition often
Coloured hair needs nourishment to look and feel healthy. Condition after every shampoo, and look for products that contain moisturising and repairing ingredients like keratin, shea butter and glycerin.

6. Limit how often you heat style
Not only is it bad for your hair’s strength, but it affects the longevity of your colour too. If you can’t go without your straightener and curling tong, be sure to use a heat protectant spray first. It seals the hair cuticle, which in turn prevents the colour from becoming dull and lacklustre.
