Summer’s finally on its way and you’re going to want gorgeous-looking hair that doesn’t require a lot of effort. Fortunately, we got two expert hairdressers to dish on five of this season’s trendiest looks that don’t require a lot of mirror time.
The long, glossy bob
The bob is back! According to Shelene Shaer, of Tanaz Hair Design, this is one of the most ‘versatile and timeless-looking ways to wear your hair straight’. If your hair’s not naturally straight, she says you can get the super-sleek look by opting for a permanent hair relaxing treatment like Bio Ionic that lasts between eight months and a year or a La Brasiliana Brazilian blow dry that lasts around three or four months. ‘Alternatively, you could use a flat iron, but this is a daily job and quite damaging on your hair,’ she says. Finally, to give your pin straight locks a bit of shine, Shelene recommends Kérastase Elixir Ultime, R400. ‘It’s the most amazing oil for creating shine and definitely the product of 2011 for me.’
The messy low pony
This is another low maintenance look that’s just so easy to copy. To begin, Shelene says you should brush your hair out, make a centre parting and then tie it up in a ponytail that sits at the base of your neck. ‘There are then two ways to do this: one is to pull the ponytail half way through so that it makes a loop and then loosen some pieces that you can backcomb,’ she says. ‘The other way is to pull your ponytail all the way through and then backcomb the hair in the pony to get a full messy look.’ To add further ‘pliable hold’, Shelene reckons a bit of hairspray’s your best bet. We like ghd Final Fix hairspray, R80.
The sleek side-parted up do
According to Shelene, this style works best on hair that hasn’t been freshly washed. ‘Iron your hair straight if you need to and brush it out, making your parting just above the outside of your eyebrow.’ Next, pull the length of your hair back into a low bun or create a simple chignon. ‘The best product to help you keep this in place is hair spray or you could use a bit of gel beforehand if you like a sleek, wet look.’
This summer, braids are big, big news. According to Motions’ celebrity stylists Nthato Mshishi, if you use the right products to take care of your hair and scalp, you can get away with the kind of plaits that will have people wondering whether they’re real or not. His top pick is Motions 3-in-1 Dry Scalp Treatment, R31.99, which he says will leave your scalp feeling ‘cool and refreshed’.?
Big, bouncy curls
Nthato reckons that if you have natural curls, you should let them loose and show them off. To prevent them from drying out, he recommends Motions Salon Hair Care Oil Sheen and Conditioning Spray, R40.99. ‘Using it will add an extra flair to your look and give your hair a natural, healthy-looking shine,’ he says.
