(Relaxnews) – Nail products have been cited as the fastest-growing segment among consumers within color cosmetics for the period January-October 2011.
A report by American market research company The NPD Group published in WWD revealed that sales of nail products increased by 59% among US consumers in the first ten months of 2011.
Speaking of the popularity of nail enamel in 2011, Bernd Beetz of beauty and fragrance manufacturer Coty explained how consumers are increasingly experimenting with their manicures.
“The nail category is now surpassing lipstick,” he is quoted as saying.
Celebrities including Katy Perry and Lady Gaga’s wacky nails have no doubt influenced consumers, with the latter offering a host of obscure nail art kits at her holiday workshop at Barneys New York for this Christmas and the former having released a limited edition range of nail products for professional nail lacquer company OPI back in January.
Other big releases in 2011 have included a set of six mini nail colors inspired by characters from the television series Glee from Sephora by OPI back in February and the release in November of a series of polishes inspired by the well-known stars of The Muppets.
2011 has also seen a rise in the male manicure, with Hollywood actor Johnny Depp heralding the trend by painting his nails blue for a movie premiere back in October and US company EVOLUTIONMAN launching a new nail care and polish collection specifically for men the following month.
Nail polish’s dominance is showing no sign of settling down for 2012, with hotly anticipated releases including hip-hop star Nicki Minaj’s six-piece range of lacquers for OPI set to release internationally in January and a nail polish collection inspired by the eagerly anticipated Hunger Games movie from China Glaze, which will sell at specialty beauty retailers from March 1.
