Six steps to basic male grooming

Male grooming tipsWe all know that guys don’t dig beauty products the way girls do. Sure, they enjoy a hot shower and a clean-shaven face, but that doesn’t mean his bathroom cabinet is filled to the brim with all sorts of lotions and potions.

And while most women can’t resist the rugged look, we have to emphasize that there’s a major difference between rugged and unkempt. Dirty hair and fingernails are a big no-no, while a bit of stubble and the bed-head look get the go-ahead.

But with all these unwritten rules, how do you know what’s acceptable and what’s not? We’ve identified six grooming products all men need to get the basics right. Whilst additional paraphernalia are a plus, these are the essentials, and without regular use of them, it’s likely you won’t get her phone number.

Body wash

Yes, we know you have a natural scent that women are intrinsically drawn to, but sweat and dirt don’t form part of it. Use a good body wash every time you shower (which should be a minimum of once a day).
We like Sh’Zen Sport Spa Additive Sportswash, R159.

Face wash
If you’re still using regular soap to wash your face, it’s time to switch over to a proper face wash. Unlike body soaps, a face wash removes impurities that lead to breakouts, plus it soothes and refreshes the skin.
We like Nivea Men Originals Deep Cleaning Face Wash, R59.99.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re into sports and activities, or prefer working quietly indoors – an anti-perspirant is absolutely essential. Trust us, your girlfriend (and everyone around you) will agree.
We like Dove Men+Care Clean Comfort Anti-Perspirant, R35.

Sunscreen is no longer reserved for redheads and children, in fact, it’s become a must-have for absolutely everyone. To prevent skin cancer, premature ageing and unsightly red skin, lather up with an SPF before you leave the house, and reapply throughout the day.
We like Ultrasun Medium Sports Clear Gel, R199.95.

Though it’s a simple concept, some people still don’t understand the significance of washing their hair regularly. Healthy hair should be washed every, or every second day, and you should be using a gentle, yet effective shampoo. Think less Kurt Cobain, more Hugh Grant.
We like ClarinsMen Total Shampoo, R195.

Shaving cream
If you’re shaving every couple of days, you’ll want to invest in a good quality shaving cream that protects and nourishes the skin while allowing for a close shave. A product containing some natural ingredients will ensure the delicate skin around your mouth and nose isn’t irritated.
We like The Body Shop For Men Maca Root Shave Cream, R115.

Great Article! Thanks! I just hate shaving! I shave once a week and I hate it. Wish there were something more convenient. Hair removal cream for mens facial hair would be so awesome! I think it will sell really well.

I love that men are becoming more aware of the products made available to them for personal grooming and care. There is nothing wrong with a man wanting to take care of their skin and hair, it shows self respect :)

4 out of 6 not bad. My husband refused to use proper facewash and sunscreen is only for the beach. His argument is that he spends all his time in the office and doesn’t get to see the sun.
