The new rainbow hair

If you’ve been lusting over the idea of unicorn inspired rainbow hair, but don’t quite have the nerve to call your stylist and take the leap, then the hidden rainbow trend is just what you’ve been waiting for!

This subtle take on the mutli-coloured mane involves turning a hidden section of your hair into colour fest that can be your little secret until the moment you choose to reveal it. A great perk if full on rainbow hair doesn’t suit your workplace or lifestyle says Johan Pretorius, creative stylist at Redrum Culture Club, “hidden rainbow hair stays hidden and will only be revealed when you feel the need to do so; on weekends, special events, etc.”

Carla Rinaldi, a hair colourist at Not Another Salon in London, gets all the credit for coming up with this fab trend, but don’t worry – you can get your colour fix here in SA too! “Any fashion forward professional creative stylist must be able to achieve this look,” explains Johan, “and we at Redrum Culture Club in the Woodstock Exchange Cape Town offer a wide variety of services. For these colours we generally use Manic Panic, a vegan and cruelty free direct dye, with pastel, neon and bright bold colours. Some even glow under black light!”

But you you’re going need to put in the time to get this look. For starters, pre-lightening in order to prepare your hair for the colouring process can take anything from 15 to 30 minutes to four or five hours, depending on the strength of the chemical being used, and the colour and state of your hair. Only then can the fun part begin.

While the hidden rainbow trend will work on most hair types, the coloured sections may show through the layers of short or very fine, limp hair. Once you’ve had your favourite colours strategically placed, all you need to do to keep your rainbow in check is re-lighten your hair roots, and stain or colour them. You can even opt for different colours when you get your touchups done, says Johan, “colour should be fun, explore!”

I wish I had the nerve to give this style a try, but unfortunately I’m very paranoid when it comes to the damage that can be done when dying your hair. And then you also have to consider how you’re going to get it back to normal when you don’t want a rainbow on your head anymore. It looks absolutely lovely though!

I really can’t see myself doing this to my very long hair. I will highlight and dye but this is way over the top.
