If you propose an adventure that’ll test him to his fullest, Dene Botha will take you up on the offer. We headed to Virgin Active (where you would be most likely find this surfer, actor, model, entrepreneur and everything else life throws him), to find out how he keeps so healthy.
So you were involved in the Bar One Man Hunt, tell us about it.
‘Grooling dirt, that is what comes to mind when I think back. It was no walk in the park. The filming was so wild; there was no safety net. They were a very professional team but it was for sure a 25-hour day. From physical training, to voting and judging, which is where the mental element came in.’
What kept you busy before that?
‘I won a reality TV show in 2010, that was the Axe Sweet Life. I have won numerous awards like the “Axe Sweet Life SA’s Most Irresistible Man”. I do lots of television commercials, I was the face of the Ford Ranger international campaign this year and I am an emcee. Give me the microphone and I’m happy. I recently emcee’d at Rocking The Daisies. What can I say, I have a knack for talking.’
Tell us how you keep so fit. Take us through your routine…
‘I mix it up. I gym three times a week, otherwise I’ll be out surfing, which I have been doing for 25 years. I love my stand up paddleboard, skating and cycling. I’ve been cycling everywhere for the past seven months. I leave the car at home! It’s easy to cycle in Cape Town.’
What is your diet like?
‘Hmmmm. I eat healthy but none of that calorie counting stuff! I take vitamins and drink loads of water. Yes, I do eat pizza, oh and I love Kauai. I’m not bothered at all about hectic diet. If you exercise regularly and balance your food intake, then that’s what matters.’
We have to throw in a grooming question – what is your facial regime like?
‘I use Michael game plan, it’s from Edgars. It has an SPF which is great as I’m outdoors a lot. I use their face wash, moisturiser and shampoo. And they even have a fragrance. It’s a one-stop shop.’
‘Hugo boss Just Different! The black bottle, with red writing.’
What’s next for you?
‘I’ve been working on a TV show concept for eight years now. I can’t tell you much more yet, but to look out for it. I am doing plenty more emcee work and will be at lots of music festivals. I love building up the hype!’
Do you have one line of motivation?
‘All that we are is a result of what we have thought. It’s actually tattooed onto me.’
