As you get older, your body produces less collagen. At the same time, things like too much sun, smoking, too much sun and bad skin care habits can damage the collagen you have.
But here comes the miracle in a capsule. Apparently, you can keep that youthful look with collagen drinks and supplements.
Or can you?
The most common answers are yes, no and maybe – which isn’t the least bit helpful. The yes people say taking it rejuvenates the skin from the inside. The no crowd say there is no solid proof it works. The maybe voters feel a better option is diet changes that will encourage the body to make more collagen.
We asked our local expert Dr Maurits from Skin Renewal if collagen drinks and supplements will really stop the stretch. Here’s his answer:
“Collagen supplements are not a fad and have been used in the health industry for many years – not only for improving skin quality but also to strengthen joints and other connective tissues such as blood vessels.
“Much of the controversy surrounding collagen supplementation has to do with the fact that if it is taken orally, it’s absorbed poorly by the body. This problem can be overcome by using hydrolysed collagen, which is absorbed well.
“There are also various types of collagen and taking the right one for the right purpose is important. Type I collagen is primarily found in skin, blood vessels, tendons and bone. Type II collagen is mainly found in cartilage and is very beneficial for joints. Hydrolysed type II collagen is commonly used to treat degenerative joint conditions such as arthritis.
“Choose a good quality hydrolysed collagen. Shortcuts in manufacturing (such as the use of excessive heat) will create a product that is absorbed poorly. If you want to use collagen for improving skin elasticity and quality, a Type I collagen supplement will be the best choice.
