Eight healthy holiday snacks you can make yourself

For anyone on a diet (or those who avoid unhealthy foods altogether), the holiday season is particularly difficult. Functions and parties mean it’s much easier to indulge in deep fried, sugary or high-calorie foods. Eating healthily doesn’t necessarily mean missing out though – why not try some of these delicious (and healthy) party snacks this festive season, and keep your bikini body for longer?

Healthy snacks for the festive season

Dippers – pita chips

Whole-wheat pita breads
Extra-virgin olive / coconut oil
Optional dried herbs (rosemary, thyme)
Salt and black pepper to taste

Skip the greasy chips and crackers with these crunchy alternatives. Open your pitas and cut them into quarters, drizzle sparingly in oil and season according to preference. Bake for a few minutes until golden brown and serve immediately.

Zucchini dipping sticks 

3/4 cup cake flour
Optional herbs (rosemary, thyme, coriander)
Salt and black pepper to taste
3 small zucchinis, sliced into sturdy sticks
2-3 egg whites, beaten

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Rest your zucchini sticks in warm, salted water for 10-15 minutes to remove bitterness and set aside.  Mix the flour, salt, pepper and herbs. Roll each stick in the egg whites, then the dry mixture, and place on a lined baking tray. Slide into the oven and bake for ten minutes, or until golden brown.

Dips – guacamole

3 avocados
2T fresh lemon juice
3T plain Greek yoghurt
Salt and black pepper to taste

Blend your avocados first, and season with lemon juice, salt and pepper. Add the yoghurt and blend briefly.


1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup plain Greek yoghurt
2T olive oil
2T lemon juice
1/4t paprika
1/4t ground cumin
Salt and black pepper to taste

Blend all ingredients together and season to your preference. You can add more yoghurt if you’re after a smoother consistency.

Creamy pesto dip 

1/2 tub basil/coriander/rocket pesto
1/4 cup low fat mayo
1/4 cup fat-free Greek yoghurt

Blend the ingredients and season to your preference.

Snacks and sweets – prawn and avocado martini

1kg small cooked prawns, skin off
2 avocados, cubed
½ red onion, finely cubed
1 cucumber, finely cubed
½ cup plain yoghurt
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2T lemon juice, fresh
Few drops chilli sauce

Coriander for garnishing
Lemon slices for garnishing
Martini glasses

Mix the yoghurt, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice and chilli together. Add the prawns, avocado, cucumber, onion and stir in until all ingredients are combined. Distribute into martini glasses and complete with lemon slices and coriander garnish.

Cucumber cups

2 thin cucumbers
2 tubs hummus, different flavours

Decorate your cucumbers by peeling stripes down their sides with a veggie peeler. Cut the cucumbers into thick discs and cut out a small hole in each one to form little cups. Fill with ½ a tablespoon of hummus, alternating flavours and serve garnished with fresh herbs.

Banana and peanut butter ice cream

4 ripe bananas, skinned
3T lemon juice, freshly squeezed
2T sugar/xylitol
½ cup fresh cream
3T peanut butter
Sugar cones

Blend the bananas, lemon juice, sugar and cream in a food processor until completely smooth.
Pour into a freeze-proof bowl and freeze for between 2-3 hours.
Remove contents from the freezer and blend again, this time adding the peanut butter and pulsing to stir through.
Return the mixture to the freezer and keep it there until 15 minutes before serving. Scoop into cones and serve, dusted in chocolate powder if preferred.
