For those who live in Cape Town, South Africa, you will agree that we are blessed with beautiful spots to exercise. We are also presented with the challenge of the wonderful South Easter that will come out of nowhere and almost knock your socks off, but you push through. Then, there are the hills that you come across when you run along our picturesque mountains and your legs burn, but again, it makes it all worthwhile when you see the peak you were pushing towards.
We’ve rounded up our local routes where you can feel in touch with nature and burn calories at the same time.
1. Atlantic Seaboard
If you feel like a flat run with the fresh breeze of sea air, then running along the promenade, either for a short 5km or 10km, is a great spot for you. There is wide open space for you to run but you may need to dodge the lady walking her dog. If you want something more challenging, move further along towards Camps Bay, all the way through to the top of Suikerbossie. Nice inclines with the same beautiful view.
2. The Pipe Track
This route starts at the junction of Tafelberg Road and Kloof Nek. It is what is says – you run along the pipes that were built for carrying water. It is quite a stony path which is uneven, but if you are used to trail running you will be fine. It is something different and has beautiful views.
3. Lion’s Head
The good ol’ Lion’s Head. With views at every turn and bend, you wont get bored. It is a relatively easy run and if you are looking for one of the best views of the City Bowl, then this is the spot for you. It can be a very busy route, so if you are looking to run it, go early!
4. Chapman’s Peak
From Noordhoek to Hout Bay, this route will show you entirely different views. It is about a 9km route with lots of incline so you will feel the burn but will have the fresh air to pull you through.
5. Newlands Forest
This is such scenic place to run with lots of adventure in store. From waterfalls to the scent of trees to birds chirping, you will get a real fix of forest bathing (a Japanese practice, which shows how people can draw on nature for healing purposes, whether it’s the mind or the body). Newlands Forest is very easy to navigate and there are routes for every level of running too. Near to this route is Kirtsenbosch National Botanical Gardens where one can run too.
6. Create your own route
There is so much opportunity to get fit and if it means running outside your house around the block, that counts too. Whichever path you choose, you will enjoy. Our climate allows us to run all year round, even if it means with a rain jacket on.
