I had the pleasure of being invited to experience the Winelands Unwind package at Kievits Kroon this past Sunday, with my fiancé, and let me tell you – it was an absolute treat for all the senses!
Upon arrival at Kievits Kroon (about 50 minutes from Sandton) you can’t help feeling relaxed by their gorgeous gardens and the Cape Dutch style buildings on the property. It really is a special place, with a real sense of peace in the air.
We began our package in the Granita restaurant where we indulged in a starter, main and dessert from an array of delicious-sounding dishes. The option you have is also to pair up each course with a specifically selected wine – the five-course meal sells to lunch visitors at the very affordable price of R165 per person on its own.
For starters, we dined on chicken liver pâté and and my fiancé chose the mini goat’s cheese pie, followed by a shot of cucumber soup and a plum-flavoured sorbet. I went for the fillet as my main while Andrew decided he felt like fish – both equally as good. Malva pudding and a special sponge cake with berry coulis were our dessert choices and saw us walking away from the restaurant with smiles from ear to ear. The food was top class and I’m already planning to get a group of friends together for a Sunday lunch there sometime soon.
We then headed for the spa, which is situated about 100m from the restaurant. It has an airy feel and is tastefully decorated with natural greens and browns. We were taken around and introduced to its fabulous facilities which made me regret not bringing a cozzie to go for a dip in the lovely heated pool, Swiss shower, jacuzzi, steam room or sauna – all available to spa guests at no additional cost.
We both changed into gorgeous robes and slippers and headed to the relaxation room to wait for our therapists. I started off with a Hand Ritual that lasted half an hour, while Andrew had a Pinotage and lime full body exfoliation. Our skin was super soft after that! These were followed by full body massages for both us, for a whole 60 minutes and felt like heaven! The therapists confirmed which parts we wanted them to concentrate on, what kind of pressure we preferred and that was the last time they spoke to us. I always hate it when you’re in a trance-like state and the therapist keeps talking, so was very relieved that they let us be and we were able to take in the full benefit of a relaxing hour.
Next were our appetiser facials – aptly named as they were only 30 minutes long. At Kievits Kroon, they use Theravine products from Stellenbosch; they were wonderful on our skin and when I looked in the mirror I was absolutely glowing!
We finished the treatments at 4:30pm and headed to the reception area where we were invited to indulge in a selection of afternoon snacks which comprised yummy Danish pastries, fruit kebabs, biscuits and more. We each had some iced tea and relaxed for a little bit before heading back to the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg.
What a great way to spend a Sunday with your partner! I also thought how nice it would have been with a couple of girlfriends. In future, I would get there earlier, hop into the sauna for a bit, maybe have a swim and then tackle the sumptuous five-course lunch. Next time … and there will definitely be a next time!
