Contouring for the shape of your face

Contouring is here to stay and with various techniques to achieve the best sculpted look, there’s only one thing you need to consider – how to do it best for the shape of your face. So, we asked CATRICE Cosmetics for their pro top tips on how to apply.

oval

Oval face shape

Step 1

First, use the Contouring Cream Palette, R89,95, to create contours on the side temples (between the eyebrows and the hairline) as well as along the upper part of the forehead.

Step 2

Apply a darker shade along the jawline and underneath the cheekbones – ideally gently taper towards the mouth. This will make the face appear slimmer. It is easy to determine the correct area by pursing the lips. Next, the contours are blended using the Contouring Brush, R79,95.

Step 3

Add highlights to the centre of the forehead, the bridge of the nose, the cheekbones and just above the lip. Depending on the desired intensity, use the creamy Highlighter Stick, R69,95 or the powdery Strobing Duo Highlighter, R89,96.

square

Square face shape

Step 1

Create the illusion of an oval face shape by using the Contouring Cream Palette to contour the areas that look square: the outer temples, below the cheekbones from the ear to the corners of the mouth and along the sides of the jawbone.

Step 2

Next, use the Highlighting Stick to highlight the middle of the forehead, the centre of the hairline, the bridge of the nose, the cheekbones, below the brows, above the lips and the chin.

heart

Step 1

The aim is to narrow the forehead while at the same time, making a pointy chin appear broader and rounder, as well as detracting from the heart shape at the hairline.

Step 2

Dark contours are also added underneath the cheekbones (starting at the ear and tapering towards the corner of the mouth) and below the tip of the chin. Work into the foundation using the Contouring Brush.

Step 3

Highlight on the centre of the forehead, the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and the upper contour of the lips. You’ll do the same along the sides of your face and at the centre of the chin to create the impression of shimmering light reflections.

round

Step 1

The goal is to make the face appear more oval with the help of skilful shading. Apply the contour colour from the Sculpting Powder Palette, R89,95, on the left and right temples along the hairline, leaving the centre of the forehead free to create an illusion of height.

Step 2

In addition, shade the area below the cheekbones and the sides of the jawline for a more narrow appearance. Carefully blend these contours with the Contouring Brush.

Step 3

Highlights should be added sparingly so that the face doesn’t look too soft. If highlights are a must, concentrate on the centre of the face – for instance, the middle of the forehead, the bridge of the nose, the upper lip contour and the chin.
