Being South Africa’s golden girl is no small feat, but ever since getting a brief wild-child phase out of the way, onse Charlize has always been the prime example of relaxed elegance. We take a look at how to recreate the look she sported at last year’s MTV Movie awards.
While Charlize has been sporting classic, understated hair and make-up looks for some years now, this was an especially toned down look for her – speculation was rife that it was because of her son, Jackson, whom she’d adopted just a couple of months earlier. Another reason could just be because Charlize was wearing a bright red peplum dress, and that she knows that if you’re wearing bright colours, you keep the make-up toned down to avoid looking like a scary person.
In a time where everyone is sporting barrel curls, braids, and buns, Charlize has opted here for a classic, bouncy blowdry. It’s simply parted off-centre, and left to fall naturally – we think this is a beautiful style on Charlize.
With a toned down make-up look, a flawless complexion is key. After moisturising, start off by using a primer over the entire face, paying special attention to areas with rougher texture or enlarged pores. Try Dermalogica Age Smart Skinperfect Primer, R625, or Stila One Step Correct, R330. Follow with a liquid or cream foundation for a dewy finish, and if you need to use powder, make it a translucent one like Catrice Prime & Fine Translucent Loose Powder, R75. Finish off with a sweep of peach-toned blush like Estée Lauder Pure Colour Blush in Brazen Bronze, R425.
For the eye shadow, all you need is two shades of gold or bronze and a highlighter shade – you’ll have to play around with what suits your skin tone. Blend them over the lower lid and into the crease, and add a dab under the lower lid too. Use a light metallic liner, especially if you have light eyes like Charlize – Chanel currently has a beautiful limited edition rose gold liner called OR Rose, R270. Round off with a slick of black mascara.
Lips are dressed in a soft nude peach, with not much shimmer or gloss. A swipe of nude lipstick followed by Palladio Herbal Lip Gloss in Clearly Coral, should do the trick. If you’re not wearing red like Charlize was doing on this occasion, a deep red lippie would also look great with the soft golds and muted tones.
