Ready to for the party season? No? Well that’s what BeautySA is here for. Marion Cotillard’s no-fuss summer evening look is a simple tweak of a daytime look.
This retro half up-do is pretty straight forward, and the good news is it will work well if your hair isn’t super clean – so no need to wash after a day out and about. Create some loose curls or waves to your taste with a curling wand or styling iron (you can do this in the morning, walk around with bouncy waves, and pin back your up-do before you go out in the evening). Part your hair (either mid or side would work) and start by loosely twisting a thick strand of hair on one side (of the parting) toward the back of your head and pin it down with a hairgrip. Do the same with the other side. If you have fine or thin hair, you’ll need to tease your hair, or add texturising spray before you start – I find dry shampoo works really well too. You can add a decorative clip in the back, as it creates a hollow – perfect for the bows that are dominating this season. Give it a spritz with aerosol hairspray to keep in place.
If sun-kissed porcelain were a description for skin, this would be it. Prep the skin with an illuminating primer like Stila One Step Illuminate and follow with a medium cover foundation. With a light hand and a large powder brush, dust golden bronzer on the fleshy part of the cheeks, the temples, and more lightly on the nose, chin and forehead. If the bronzer is too dark, your face will look dirty – we’re talking unwashed-I-haven’t-bathed-lately. If it’s too orange, well, we all know what that looks like. I’m enjoying Gosh’s Multicolour Blush Bronze Pie, R135. Add a dash of natural blush to the apples of the cheeks – try Almay Wakeup Makeup in 02 Rose, R140.
Beautiful, bronze eye shadow is so hard to come by that I often use actual bronzer. If it is indeed for an evening ‘do, you can go for a luminous, shimmery shade. One colour and a highlighter shade will do the trick for this look, combined with good old-fashioned black eyeliner and mascara. For stay-all-night mascara, a great product is YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof, R325. Eyebrows can be filled in with powder or pencil, and kept in place with a wax or gel. They form a strong feature in a look like this, so don’t neglect them. Try the Gosh Eyebrow Kit, R140, or Almay Brow Defining Pencil (with a nifty comb at the other end), R140. Never darken them more than one shade with make-up, rather see a pro at a salon for tinting – it will look much more natural.
The look pictured calls for natural, nude and matte. Wear your favourite nude lipstick, and blot it well for a matte effect. If this look seems too tame for a night out, rest assured that it will work equally well with fuchsia, coral or siren red lips too.
