Get the look: Terry Pheto

Get the look: Terry PhetoI can spend an inappropriate amount of time looking at pictures of Terry Pheto (in a much less stalkerish way than that sounds). The girl’s got a vibe to her that seems so relaxed she can easily be your next-door neighbour. But at the same time, there’s a poise and radiance that indicates she’s so much more than just a pretty face. Best known for her role in Tsotsi in 2005, she can currently be seen in South Africa on Days of our Lives until 4 October.

Complexion

YSL Perfect Touch Radiant Brush Foundation, R530, comes with a built-in brush for flawless application. It provides medium coverage, and mattifies without drying the skin. I usually prefer applying foundation by hand, but this one’s a winner! Dab concealer onto any imperfections – I love Elizabeth Arden’s Ultra Lift and Firm Ceramide Concealer, R175. It comes in three shades and the creamy consistency ensures you don’t cake it on unnecessarily. If you’re oil-prone, set the foundation and concealer with a light application of compact powder.

Eyes

For a fresher spin on the winged smoky eye, switch the darkest two colours for muted mauves, greens or royal blues. Apply like you would normally, but remember to avoid black and charcoal eye shadow altogether if you’re going for a fresh, daytime look. Colours I would try include Catrice Intensif’Eye in 040 Have You Seen Alice (marbled green), R49, and The Body Shop Baked to Last Eye Colour, R120, in 04 Quartz or 03 Jade. Use a gel eye liner to create a dramatically enhanced lash line – Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner in Black Gold, R99, will compliment eyes with yellow or gold flecks. Round off with mascara, and be sure to fill in eyebrows with matte eye shadow or a soft eye pencil that is one or two shades lighter than the brow hairs.

Cheeks

Since you’re putting quite a bit of colour on the eyes, you don’t want to do much on the cheeks – the aim here will be to illuminate, contour, and add definition. For this, I prefer multi-faceted palettes that can contain bronzer, highlighter, and sometimes even blusher. Some come in the form of different colour strips (that can either be swirled together or used separately), while others are marbled or have embossed designs. Good ones to try are Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strips, R170, Inglot AMC Multicolour Systems, R269, and The Body Shop Shimmer Waves, R170. Use on, under or around the cheekbones for definition where needed.

Lips

Lips are barely there. Make sure they’re conditioned by gently exfoliating with a washcloth and using lip balm. If you feel like adding some colour, dab some lipstick (or lip stain) in the centre of the lower and upper lip, and blend outward with your finger or a lip brush for a natural look.
