How to: Achieve the perfect dark winter lip

Friday, 31 May 2013

Winter lipsAccording to Gina Myers, it is a known fact that the quickest way to lift the spirit is with a good lipstick! Agree? Well we certainly do. At the BeautySouthAfrica office we can’t get enough of those deep berry lip shades, however, it can get a bit tricky when you apply a dark colour. Those horrid untidy lines and lipstick teeth are a big no-no! Here are some tips for a fab lip:

A few vital things to remember when doing any lip (not just a dark one) is that you want even tone throughout your lip. First, start out by applying a foundation or concealer over the lip area. This evens out the colour of your lips and also aids in the longevity of the lipstick.

If you’re a newbie at applying a dark shade, Gina recommends using a lip liner within the same family of colours. You don’t want it to be too obvious – just outline the area around your cupid’s bow. If you have thinner lips, draw the line on the outer edge of the lip, or if they’re larger, apply only to the inside of the lip.

The second last step should be choosing your colour. This will completely depend on your skin tone and choice of outfit. For example, if you have fair skin and are wearing all black, rock out with a deep berry colour. This allows for a slight undertone of colour, even though it is dark. If you have a pink undertone and are also wearing some colour, balance it out by wearing a peach lip or one with a brown undertone to it.

Finish off with a bit of gloss for ultra shine (especially if you’re going out on the town!).

Lip liner in the same shade makes a big difference, don’t wear lipliner that’s much darker than your lip shade!

is it possible to go into a store and get an analysis like you do with a skin?

    Hi ritsiebarlow

A deep pink or fuchsia will definitely be more wintery than a bright or neon pink, plus then you won’t have to steer too far away from the shade you love!

I’ve tried many shades of lipstick, but I just don’t look good to myself in a dark lip :-( My signature colour is MAC Saint Germain, which is a real neon pastel pink. How can I go more “winter” without going too dark? Fuschia?

    Hi Mshayisa
If you have dark skin, opt for bright colours like cherry red or fuchsia pink – this will look young and fresh and enhance your deep skin tone beautifully :)

Thanks for the inspiration, I am always a bit scared of these dark colours – that I will look like a vampire, but I may go a shade or two darker than my normal colour

Lipstick is so attractive! It gives shape and definition to the lips and can brighten up your face and mood in a heartbeat! Next time I will surely try using a bit of foundation on my lips before adding colour. Bold lips with neutral eyes, or smokey eyes with nude lips, ALWAYS a winner!

I’ve heard that if you start with lip primer and lip liner, put the lipstick of, blot, use a brush and single ply tissue to cover your mouth and “powder” your lips on top through the tissue and repeat this at least twice, then gloss at the end, it’ll last far longer!

I definitely agree with Gina’s tip.. If you dont like the foundation/concealer idea, you could always use a primer or lip primer, it does exactly the same as the foundation.. Primers are normal oil/silicon/water based, all depending on the brand.. I’ve found that adding primer to the lips helps smooth out the lip line and wrinkles, especially with more mature skins..

I love lipstick and totally agree that it lifts the spirits; I have passed my love for lipstick down to my daughters aged 11 and 3 and thank you for the reminder about covering with foundation before applying; I used to do that back when I was younger:)
