The change of season and contrast of cold and warm weather can take its toll on your hair. Using the trusted “bantu knot” method is a great form of protective styling and it turns out, it gives you luscious curls when you uncoil them – without the excessive need for heat from hair dryers and irons. Pamela Pelema from ORS South Africa demonstrated how to get the perfect curls using the ORS’s new range for natural hair at the #ClicksCurls event. Here’s how to get the look.

Prep work

The most important step before attempting any style is to cleanse the scalp and hair with shampoo, followed by conditioner. If your hair is very dry you can moisturise and leave on the conditioner for 15 minutes, covering your hair with a plastic cap.

Tip: Before applying any styling products, it is always important to look for split ends, and trim them off. Yes, trim off split ends! Even if you are transitioning from relaxed to natural hair it is important to trim your hair often. Your style will look fresher, shinier, and healthier without split ends.

Step 1

To achieve this style, we used bantu knots.  The first step is to divide the hair into sections.

As you divide the hair, apply styling product to the hair using the praying hand technique (instead of raking product through your curls, rub it between your palms, with the palms of your hands touching like ‘praying hands’, smooth product from root to end), comb it through, and tie it in a ponytail. Now that your entire head is divided into sections of hair, you can start your bantu knots.

Step 3

Making one ponytail at a time, divide the hair into two sections and twist the hair in a two-strand twist.  When you reach the end of the hair, re-apply some styling product to ensure the ends are kept neatly together, twist the section downward, and pin in place with a bobby-pin. Because heat can easily damage hair, we prefer to leave the hair to dry naturally overnight. You can, however, dry the bantu knots under the dryer for 30 to 45 minutes.

When dry, undo each bantu knot individually. Carefully remove the bobby-pin, untwist the hair, and remove the elastic that kept the ponytail in place. Once all the bantu knots have been undone, the hair can be gently separated with an afro comb. Apply a styling product for the perfect hold.

Top tip: To maintain your style be sure to apply a moisturising cream every second day. You could even switch things up and rock your small knots à la Rihanna, when alternating between your coiled curls.

  1. I’ve tried bantu knots before but can never keep them for long, does anyone have tips on how I should sleep with them to avoid ruining them during the night?
