Exfoliators can cost an arm and a leg, and for many women they’re an unnecessary added expense. However, exfoliating your skin once or twice a week is absolutely essential to remove dry and dead cells, plus to keep your pores healthy and unclogged, thereby minimising breakouts.

If you’re looking to save a few Rands, or if you’re keen to try out a natural exfoliator that’s gentle on the skin, then this baking soda trick is for you.

1. Dampen your skin a squeeze a dollop of your cleanser into the palm of your hand.
2. Pour a teaspoon of baking soda into your hand and mix well with your cleanser.
3. Gently massage the mixture onto your skin in circular motions, concentrating on dry and problematic areas.
4. After about 30 seconds, rinse your skin and gently pat it dry.
5. Follow with your serum and moisturiser.

Baking soda is excellent at removing oil, dirt and dead skin cells and is very gentle on the skin. A lot of women who struggle with breakouts have reportedly said this mixture helped clear up their spots and when they used it often, it minimised the formation of new blemishes too. If you give this a try, let us know in the comments section below how you experienced it – we’d love to know!

actually I have used Bircabonade of Soda with my face wash, twice a week. I feel like the granules open up the pores and wash away any make up or dirt thouroughly, breakouts have been minimised as well. I will try the baking soda specifically and see what it does. Using apple cider viniger mixed with water as my toner has also helped clear any spots and instantly removes breakouts when I have them. It sorts of burns them out without leaving any scarring or damage to the skin, its like putting a laser treatment on.

I have tried this before but with lemon juice. It definitely improved the appearance of blemishes. It dried my skin out so I applied an egg white mask afterwards for smooth skin

baking soda can be a hit or a miss for most people especially people with oily sensitive acne prone skin like myself. However a lot of online gurus recommend it and for good reason. It has helped clear my skin of acne and after using it my skin feels so much better to the feel and my pores open up and breath. I use it twice a week as opposed to everyday because my skin is very sensitive. I lather my facial soap in my hands then sprinkle about a teaspoon into my hands. I have discouvered when using it as a scrub it is important not to put too much pressure with your hands because you over exfoliate thus causing your skin to break out. Its an amazing product to use and I endorse it. it helped a lot with my skin

Also add baking soda to your bath to improve alkalinity & clean the dead cells off your skin. Add epsom salts to to detox the skin and relax sore muscles. It’s great!

This is my favourite go-to method of exfoliating. One must just be careful of not over-scrubbing as it can leave you red and sensitive.

I’m so going to try this! would this work if i used my exfoliator instead of cleanser?

    1. BeautySouthAfrica

      Hi Angela
We wouldn’t recommend adding baking soda to your exfoliator, as it might be too harsh on your skin (seeing as it’s two exfoliating products together, then).
