How to: Stop unhealthy eating

Healthy-eating

Was healthy eating top of your new year’s resolution list? For many of us, ditching the cheeseburger and chips for a nutrient-rich alternative is an impossible task. We’ve put together some tips to help you get started, and to make the journey a little bit easier.

Create a meal plan and shopping list
Before you brave the supermarket, draw up a detailed meal plan for the week, with the ingredients needed for each meal. This will help you put a detailed shopping list together. Wandering aimlessly around the shops for groceries is a recipe for disaster – you’re much more likely to stock up on unhealthy items.

Make it yourself
Fast foods and pre-made meals might be convenient, but they are usually filled with extra sugars, salt and preservatives that aren’t doing your body any good. Set some time aside on the weekend to cook a few delicious meals and freeze them for the week. Soups, curries and stews are a good place to start.

Shop fresh
Fresh fruit and veg contain more healthy nutrients than dried and frozen ones do. Plus they’re great for yummy summer salads – keep them on hand for days when you want lighter meals.

Keep snacks at work
Feeling peckish at your desk? Instead of running down to the corner shop for a packet of crisps, keep some raw nuts, biltong and fruit at your desk to snack on.

Don’t give in to sugar temptations
Getting a craving for something sweet is normal, but you don’t need a slab of chocolate to curb it. Instead, have some herbal tea (berry flavours work wonders) or some plain yoghurt with a bit of honey. If that doesn’t work, a block of dark chocolate might do the trick.

Reward yourself
Of course your goal should be to eat healthy food every day, but that doesn’t mean you should deprive yourself completely. Treat yourself to a pizza night or slice of birthday cake every so often – you’ll appreciate it more plus it’s a nice reward for sticking to your eating plan.

What are some of your tips for sticking to a healthy diet?

  1. I’ve actually been eating healthy this year and it’s a decision that I don’t regret. Great article!

  2. It IS easy to follow a fairly healthy eating plan, it all starts with having self-control. You’re the one with the power to make excuses when grocery shopping, dining out and ordering takeaways. So just stop making excuses and choose to eat better.
