We all envy those girls with their big, bright Bambi eyes, who look like they clock eight hours of restful sleep… Every. Single. Night. But wait; it’s not just sleep. It’s actually a clever make-up technique that you need to learn pronto.
Here’s how to make your eyes look bright and beautiful in five simple steps:
Step 1: Define your brows
Your brows can make or break any look, so ensure that they’re impeccably groomed. Try L.O.V Browttitude Eyebrow Contouring Palette, R247,95. Then grab your new best friend, Wet n Wild Ultimate Brow Highlighter in C633, Highlight of my Life, R89,95. When applied just below the arch of your brow, this incredible pen will magically lift your brows and brighten your overall eye area.
Step 2: Curl your lashes
For an instant, easy lash lift, a lash curler is the tool for the job. This is often a trick we all forget about, but it’s a simple, effective solution. The Tweezerman Lash Curler has a thick round pad to form a more intense curl without ever creasing the lashes. Plus three bonus silicone pads are included in the pack. It is available from Dis-Chem (R250).
Here’s how to use the Tweezerman Lash Curler:
* Eyelash curlers work best on clean eyelashes. Make sure your eyelashes are free of mascara.
* With your blowdryer on low heat, blow air on the curler for no more than three seconds. Touch the metal to the inside of your arm. If it’s hot, let it cool for a few seconds. You don’t want to burn your eyelid
* Open the curler, clamp lashes near the roots. Hold for 10-30 seconds. Never curl lashes after you apply mascara – as the mascara dries, lashes can stick to the curler and be torn from the roots. Don’t bother curling bottom lashes.
* Repeat on the other eye
Step 3: Conceal and reveal
Dab concealer over the undereye area with Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit, R455. With a concealer and pressed powder in one kit, it’s super simple to hide dark circles. Then, create a high crease line with a pale shade of blush or eyeshadow. L’Oreal Paris Make-up Designer, Shirley Molatlhegi, suggests trying L’Oreal Paris Le Blush in Nectarine 163, R179,95. Shirley says, “Apply the shade from the outside corner of your brow towards the inner corner of your eye.” This will give your eyelids definition.
Step 4: Lighten to brighten
This might be a new concept for you, but instead of black liner on the inner rim of your eye, try a white or pale-coloured pencil. Darker colours make your eyes appear smaller, whereas lighter colours help to open them up. Try NYX Mechanical Eye Pencil in White, R85; its creamy formula ensures it will glide on smoothly. We also love Yardley Retractable Eye Pencil in White, R99,95, L.O.V Confessioneyes Kohl Pencil in Veil of Nude, R94,95 and Catrice Long Lasting Eye Pencil in Pearly Bird, R44,95.
Step 5: Highlight and lengthen
For the finishing touches to this wide-eyed look, apply a dab of highlighter to the inner corners of your eyelids. Catrice Made to Stay Inside Eye Highlighter Pen in In The Mood for Nude, R54,95, will do the trick. Then grab a light champagne or rosy-coloured shadow to add extra shimmer to your eyelids. We recommend Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio in Walking on Eggshells, R99,95, or Rimmel Magnifeyes in Poser, R79,95. And last, but certainly not least, because this is the magic ingredient, apply more than one lashing of black mascara to your top and bottom lashes. Try L’Oreal Paris Volume Million Lashes Feline Mascara, R199,95, Yardley Volumelast Maximux Mascara, R129,95, or Rimmel Super Curler Mascara, R139,95.

Perfect Combination for an artist to creative a master piece
Would love to do all this, but time is limited in the morning!
Thanks for the amazing tips!
Your lashes are what makes your whole look pop out and nothing says “hello, look at me” like bold lashes. Thanks for the tips.
These tips help for my ‘hooded eyes’ :)
I have small eyes and I find that the white or nude eyeliner in the bottom water line makes such a difference. Also adjusting your cateye to the shape of your eye can really help in making your eyes appear larger.
I hope I win *smiles*
Lash Curler and good set of make-up brushes (tools), the perfect combination.
