The red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards is well-known for showcasing bold, statement beauty. From Lil Kim’s purple wig to Gwen Stefani – who was setting trends way back in 1998, with her blue hair, glossy skin and bold lipstick. This year was no exception, with a clear rise of retro-inspired trends. We round up some of the best beauty moments from the runway, as told by Instagram.
Yara Shahidi was one of our clear favourites on the night (pictured above). The Black-ish star rocked two mega looks that highlighted her luminous skin, statement eyes and 20s-inspired finger waves. We especially loved her silky gold dress and matching gold eye make-up with glitter accents, smudgy black liner and glossy lips. Her slicked back curls was a definite winner with the added detail from her voluminous low ponytail. Major beauty goals.
Eyes on the prize
Katy Perry was the host with the most (dramatic eyes). Eye make-up was a major beauty focus on the night and her pretty pink eye shadow and bold brows served as one of her best looks. Platinum blonde hair also proved to be a hit, once again. Her comments… not so much.
Get the look: Katy wore CoverGirls’s TruNaked Eyeshadow palettes in Jewels and Goldens. We think the essence roses eyeshadow palette incorporates pretty much the same colours in one palette, so you can try your hand at the bold look.
Red wine lips
Olivia Munn opted for minimal eye make-up and a bold, deep burgundy lip. Her tousled waves and dewy cheeks looked romantic with an edgy twist. Love!
Demi Lovato got monochromatic with matching cobalt liner to complement the blue ensemble she rocked while performing. Her red carpet look was just as fierce, thanks to her voluminous curls, nude lips and smokey eye make-up. More than just a triple threat!
Beauty blast from the past
Talk about a throwback! Teyana Taylor slayed the runway and paid homage to Janet Jackson’s 1995 VMAs look. The beauty sure knows how to make a statement and walked away with a ‘Moon Man’ for Best Choreography in a Video, much like Janet did way back in the 90s. When art (and fashion) imitates life?
Vanessa Hudgens was reminiscent of the red dancing emoji, in the best way! She rocked some of spring’s major trends including wet-look hair (it’s totally a thing), sunset eyes and glowing skin.
Get the look: Add volume-boosting spray and blow-dry your hair up, away from your face to get that much needed extra body. Finish with a glossy serum – or just flaunt your second-day hair! For the eyes? Apply red eye shadow and add a reverse cat-eye flick with some glitter liner and generous lashings of mascara. Fierce!
Christina Milian opted for lashes, sexy wet-look hair, and all of the highlighter. Get the look: Add highlighter to the high points of your face; namely your cheekbones, nose, cupids bow, and dust lightly on your forehead.
Reverse eye make-up
Paris Jackson made a statement with reverse eye make-up and donned aqua eyeliner, smudgy eye make-up and soft waves. The beauty look was effortless yet chic.
Joan Smalls served classic model glam in this season’s sunset eyes trend and a twisted top knot. We’re loving her defined cheekbones and luminous skin.
Cat eye FTW
Nicki Minaj stayed true to her favourite beauty accessory: the cat eye. The bold beauty kept it simple with some pink sheer gloss to match her ensemble. And of course, rose gold hair. Because, Nicki Minaj.
Pink shared our favourite beauty trend of the night with her heartwarming acceptance speech and message of self-love and challenging beauty norms. Love!
