Ready to try something new? Here are the pretty and downright wacky beauty trends taking over Instagram and Pinterest boards, worldwide.
Squiggly lipstick is a thing
The latest and wackiest trend to hit the interwebs? Squiggly lips! When basic application becomes well, basic, we can always rely on Insta beauties to start getting creative. It started with squiggly brows and then the trend went south.
Slightly bizarre and reminiscent of a certain character in Batman, the trend has been met with mixed reactions but seems to be seriously taking off. Beauties are applying their lipstick in spikey waves, in a variety of finishes and colours. Sort of looks like lip icing to us. Thoughts?
Space buns/macaron buns
Many of us recall donning this playful do as kids, but it seems the 90s is back with a vengeance – including Baby Spice’s favourite hairstyle. Dubbed “Space buns”, the festival-ready style took over ‘The Gram’ and is noted as one of the top hair trends for spring. The adorable look is edgy and you can even take it up a notch and add all of the glitter to your hairline. Because, unicorn magic!
Not quite sophisticated enough for you? Introducing… “Macaron buns”. French girls have adopted the trend and Pinterest boards are already filling up with different varieties of the look. The more understated version is basically just placed lower, inspired by the Parisian classic, macaron dessert.
Get the look: Apply some texturising spray and start with a French plait before securing your hair into two buns, for a fuller and super versatile effect. Which bun do you prefer?
Rose quartz manicures
A chic, slightly ethereal and downright delicious-looking new update to your DIY mani. The rose quartz, marble effect manicure is one of our favourite new trends. Jewels, gems and precious stones have been inspiring an array of beauty routines and it was inevitable that they’d land on our nails. The look is perfect for beauties of any age and can be both edgy and romantic. Search #QuartzNails on Instagram for more!
Get the look: Choose a neutral pale pink base and use a thin striping brush to create the marble effect. Dip your striping brush into white polish and get creative with some mismatched cracked-looking lines, A.K.A veins. Practice makes perfect!
Afro Pop princess
Afro Pop is a festival renowned for great artists, stylish threads and beauty inspiration for days! We love the pops of colour and fashion risks that somehow just work. Maybe not so much on us mere mortals, but we can try. A few do-able trends surfaced and we’re ready!
The Felani braid was a definite favourite, seen in an array of colours and added updates. From pink to a combination of rainbow colours and woven threads, to beaded braids and cropped dos. A great solution to protective styling, the look is slightly more lightweight than box braids.
Lipstick choices were either low-key and neutral or full-on brightly coloured. Play around with colours and finishes for an added edge this spring.
Aaliyah ft MAC
And while we’re on the topic of beauty and trending… have you heard MAC will be launching a tribute collection to Aaliyah? Eep! The beauty giants celebrated the late Aaliyah’s birthday with the epic announcement and the internet rejoiced. We’re not sure what the collection will include, but it’s surely going to be one of those must-haves that’s bound to sell out in seconds. Maybe an Aaliyah-inspired glossy lip and highlighter? After years of trying to recreate her look, fans are no doubt waiting for the 2018 release with bated breath.
