Late last month, I was invited to Indigo Brands’ media day. (For those of you who don’t know, Indigo Brands is one of SA’s biggest cosmetics companies and are responsible for beauty brands like Yardley, Rimmel and Sally Hansen). Held at the uber-glam One&Only hotel, the day involved talks given by different beauty industry experts as well as a walk through showcase to show off some of their newest, most exciting cosmetics and perfumes.
The Yardley make-up artists were out in full force doling out free make-overs…
…and you could get your nails done at the Nailene stand:
I also got to attend a talk on colour trends by Yardley’s make-up guru Carl Isaacs. He reckons bold-coloured lippie like red and coral as well as as dewy skin and liquid liner are going to be big news for spring and summer. I also got to ask him a few questions when he was done speaking. Check it out:
So Carl, what are the big nail colours to look out for as the weather heats up?
Coral, every shade of blue, bright as well as pastel pink, metallics as well as taupey shades like ‘greige’.
Of all the colour trends you mentioned, what’s your favourite?
Red lipstick because it’s so glamorous. To pull it off, avoid dark red if your lips are very small and top your lipstick with a shiny, metallic red gloss like Yardley Stayfast Supershine lipgloss in Rocking Red, R52,95.
You mentioned that a luminous skin finish is big news. How do you pull that off?
Opt for a foundation that promises a dewy, glowy finish. Both Yardley Airbrush foundation (R99,95, available as of September) and Uplift MAXX foundation (R129,95) will give you that effect. And if you’ve got an oily-combination skin that needs a bit of powder be sure to only use it in your T-section. You cheeks can be left to glow.
Got any top tricks in regards to applying liquid liner?
Yes. Line your eye in three parts. Start with the outside first, then draw a line above the pupil and lastly from the inner corner to the middle. Breaking up the line will help you create a steadier look. Also, you should always start your line as close to the lashline as possible and then build it up. Ideally, you want the line to be slightly thicker along the outer corner’s of the eye. (Carls liner of choice? Yardley Liquid Eyeliner in Carbon Black, R69,95).
If our reader’s only try one trend, what should it be?
Bold lipstick. You don’t have to go for red, but at least try an amazing coral.
So, which of the big summer make-up trends are YOU just dying to try?
