The best mascara for your buck – according to the BSA Trial Team
1) Inglot Lash Enhancer
Reviewed by: Nicole Cogill
Lash type: Curly, average length lashes
Describe the mascara: The wand is fairly traditional and makes it easy to apply. The brush is comb-like and straight. The bristles are soft and rubbery and work very well for curly lashes as it moves naturally up the lash. The short, evenly spaced bristles help define the lashes nicely.
Verdict: I would prefer a volumising mascara, but this gives really nice length and definition. Bonus? There’s no clumping and it’s easy to remove and doesn’t leave any residue.
Retail price: R349
Go-to mascara? I usually buy Essence I heart extreme volume – it gives really great volume and length and doesn’t clump.
2) Yardley High Definition Mascara
Reviewed by: Sarah Holtshousen
Lash type: Long and thin
Describe the mascara: The wand is thin which is what I prefer as it makes it easier to get close onto the lashes, and gives it a “brush” effect on the lashes. It has a traditional brush, and it’s quite short. Also, no clumping.
Verdict: The formula was a bit too thick for my taste but it definitely works well. This particular product is great for lengthening.
Retail price: R149, 95
3) BioNike Defence Colour Mascara
Reviewed by: Kass
Lash type: Average
Describe the mascara: It has a thin, precise, strong wand. The straight brush has solid bristles and allows for fuss-free application.
Verdict: I like it because it feels clean, applies hassle-free, and the wand pulls out clean without clumps. It also removes brilliantly.
Retail price: R165
Go-to mascara? This is my new go-to mascara. Seriously, I have sensitive eyes and often wear contact lenses. This mascara, while applying easily, has magnificent lengthening and curling properties. I love its clean, no-fuss application. It left me feeling polished, knowing there was no residue or run-off around my eyes after a few hours of wear. I really love this product and can highly recommend it!
4) Palladio Double Agent Mascara Lash Extender and Undercover Fiber Booster
Reviewed by: Tatum Whiting
Lash type: Average
Describe the mascara: This mascara offers a two-step lash system. The one wand works to lengthen your lashes, while the other helps create a bold, full finish. The bristles are thick and the sculpting fibres help lengthen each lash.
Verdict: I absolutely loved this product. I appreciate double-wand mascaras as it allows you to perform many functions, with one nifty product. The result? Beautifully long, voluminous lashes. It also created a fierce curve which I like and it lasted all day without clumping.
Retail price: R169,95
5) Rimmel Volume Shake Mascara
Reviewed by: Maritza
Lash type: Normal/thin
Describe the mascara: It had a widely-spaced, traditional brush. The formula is clump-free and stays fresh. The shaker function was pretty fun too.
Verdict: I love the natural look this mascara creates.
Retail price: R159,95
6) Catrice Rock Couture Mascara
Reviewed by: Fagmieda Willemse
Lash type: Dark and slightly curled up
Describe the mascara: It’s a beautiful thick wand which fits perfectly on my lashes. The comb is well shaped – with four spaced parts, to grip better I suppose. It has shorter but thicker bristles.
Verdict: I’m always looking for the full-on volume for fuller lashes. This mascara did not clump, and definitely lasts for 24 hrs. I woke up to luscious lashes!
Retail price: R79,95
7) L’Oreal False Lash Superstar Mascara
Reviewed by: Meryl Weits
Lash type: Thin and pale eyelashes
Describe the mascara: There are two brushes, the one is straight and the other is curlier. The brush shape is longer than usual, but both are very comfortable to use. The formula was a bit thick but it was perfect for application.
Verdict: I like thick, voluminous lashes that are dark, curly with separation. I want something that enhances my eyes. I like it because it gives the perfect amount of thickness and volume with a bit of sexiness. It looked as if I was wearing fake eyelashes! I also removed it easily with L’Oreal Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. I will definitely buy it again. I’m always pleased with L’Oreal products!
Go-to mascara: My go-to mascara and also my go-to beauty product is definitely the Inglot Lash Enhancer. I never leave the house without this secret weapon.
Retail price: R199,95
