Find your perfect foundation formula

A radiant, flawless complexion is not only the blessing of good genes. The right foundation shade and type can make a world of a difference.

The base to perfect make-up is a beautiful foundation. It can be tricky to choose the right formula and shade. A good foundation covers up any skin concerns such as uneven skin tone and pigmentation, fine lines and large pores without being too obvious.

When choosing a foundation, it’s best to first know your skin type, the coverage you need and the finish you desire from your foundation.

Skin type vs. formula
If you have oily skin, go for oil-free or mattifying foundations. For normal to combination skin, a cream-to-powder foundation is the best. If you have dry skin, use a stick, liquid or hydrating foundation. Mineral foundation works well for all skin types, especially for dry and sensitive skin. A mousse foundation is great for any skin type but most ideal for oily / combination skin because it helps to mattify it. It also creates a flawless finish on mature skin as it doesn’t settle on fine lines and wrinkles.

Pink vs. yellow undertones
Yellow-based foundations leave the skin with a natural-looking finish while those with a pink undertone are ideal for a fair or light-skinned complexion. Most foundations come with an SPF 15. This amount is never enough coverage so always use sunscreen under your foundation or opt for a moisturiser with an SPF of at least 30.

BB creams vs. tinted moisturisers
If you don’t like wearing foundation, a tinted moisturiser is your best option. It helps to improve the overall health of skin, yet leaving it with a natural-looking finish. A BB cream gives a bit more coverage than a tinted moisturiser. Most BB creams are creams that give a hint of a tint when applied as they adapt to your skin tone.

We recommend:
Avon Skin Loving Beauty Balm, R159.95.
Conceal while your skin heals with Clinique Even Better Foundation with SPF 15, R375.
For natural-looking coverage, try Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB, R84.95.
Maybelline Matte Dream Mousse, R145, is great for a matte and smooth finish.

  1. I mix a dewy foundation with a matte foundation and get a perfect mixture for my combination skin.

  2. I used the Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB, Dark shade, but after a few hours on it would oxidize and would turn a shade darker. I do see that they have changed the packaging and hopefully the formula. I will try it this again in Autumn.

  3. I’m in love with the Avon BB and CC Creams. I’m currently using the CC cream -though I’m the shade caramel- SPF50, which is a great price as well. Worth a buy.

  4. I much prefer tinted moisturisers and BB creams over foundation because it the coverage is so light that my natural skin still shows. It just looks so much more natural and appealing for every day wear.

  5. I stick with Estee Lauder Double Wear – have done for years and it’s the best. I have been enjoying the Sorbet BB cream though which is lovely. The Dream Matte Mousse just really isn’t for me.
