Luzanne Ashby from Pink Peonies blog chats to us about her favourite spring beauty products:
Spring is on upon us, and I think it will be in full swing before we know it. Flowers are blooming all around, and the early morning and late night chilly nips in the air seem to have disappeared. For me, with spring comes the urge to slip on some strappy sandals, show some leg, and put a fresh face forward. After a rather brutal winter, it’s time to retire the dark lipsticks and prepare for a new season. Today I’ve rounded up five products to revamp your beauty routine, and help get you ready for the warmer weather ahead.
Exfoliate your body – I don’t know about you, but after a rather dry winter, my skin needs all the TLC it can get. During spring your arms and legs are likely going to be exposed, so make sure your skin looks soft, smooth and hydrated. Slough off dry skin with a fresh sugar scrub. I recently discovered the Pomegranate & Grapefruit Sugar Scrub (R 110) from Sorbet and I’m in love (by the way, I think it smells like watermelon – yum!). Gentle yet effective, it contains a combination of gritty-enough bits and nourishing ingredients to reveal softer, smoother skin. Remember, scrubbing away dry skin cells clogging your pores not only helps your skin absorb more moisture but also preps your skin for self-tanning. So scrub up, and then smooth on a body lotion or body butter.
Switch to spring-inspired pastels – There’s no doubt that the most timeless colours of spring are those that mimic the season’s freshest blooms. So pack away those dark, vampy nail polishes and opt for pastel hues. You’re more likely to show off your toes before you’re ready to bare the rest, so make sure your feet are in tip-top shape. I always like to kick the season off with a pretty pastel pink. It flatters most skin tones and looks sophisticated when paired with a pretty spring frock. My go-to is Essie French Affair (R 125), a gorgeous candy floss pink polish.
Sport a fresh-faced make-up look – As the temperature rises, so does the appeal of lightweight make-up. Get ready to ditch the heavy foundations and opt for something that looks more natural. The secret to youthful, yet flawless looking skin is a tinted moisturiser or lightweight BB cream. Choose a formula that blends effortlessly and provides just enough coverage to even out your skin tone. I love my tried & true Kiehl’s Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream SPF50/PA (R 525) for its ability to improve the look of my skin while making it seem like I’m not wearing make-up at all. I always receive compliments whenever I wear it! Formulated with sensitive skins in mind, yet effective for all skin types, this BB cream is fragrance-free, paraben-free, mineral oil-free, dermatologist and allergy tested for sensitive skin, and non-comedogenic (won’t clog your pores). Apply concealer only where you need it most (for me it’s under my eyes and around my nose) and that’s it – you’re ready to face the day!
Bronze it up – Sandal season goes hand-in-hand with sun-kissed, skirt-worthy legs. Not everyone has the genetics to get a flawless tan when exposed to the sun (and baking in the sun isn’t all that great for your skin either). The solution? A lightweight, wash-off instant self-tanner that will help you attain a sun-kissed glow. Something like The Body Shop Honey Bronze Tinted Leg Mist (R 99) is perfect, especially for those who do not want to commit to a long-lasting instant tanner. This fast-drying tinted gel contains no oils and no shimmers, providing a matte streak-free faux glow. It blends very easily (no need for a tanning mitt) and the colour is very universal, not too orange and not too dark – perfect for paler skin. The best part? It washes off just as easily in the shower.
Make it glossy – You can’t go wrong topping a fresh-faced make-up look off with a glossy pout. I am positively smitten with the NYX Butter Gloss lip glosses (R 125), which debuted in South Africa just a couple of months ago. These richly pigmented glosses glide on smoothly, feel moisturising on the lips, but are not sticky at all. I love them dearly and own most of the shades in the collection. My top three shades for spring are (left to right): Strawberry Parfait, Peach & Cream and Vanilla Cream Pie.
