Ethnic foundation shades

When it comes to choosing a foundation, you first need to decide what formula you desire. Do you need full coverage or is it a long lasting formulation you’re after? Then comes the tough part. What shade do you pick? Keep in mind that your skin tone may not be even, as women of colour tend to scar and hyper pigment more easily from acne than others. You may find yourself needing to mix two different shades to get your perfect match. Remember you don’t want to look ashy, so play around until you have a flawless complexion and are happy with the look.

Here are a few of our favourite foundations for women of colour:
1. Estée Lauder Double Wear FoundationR415
2. Revlon Colorstay Makeup in CaramelR225
3. Rimmel Lasting Finish 25hour foundation in MochaR99.95
4. Lancôme Teint Idol Ultra in 11 Muscade, R455

Rimmel lasting 25hour foundation works best with people with oily skin. It gives a very nice glow to the skin, the only thing about the product is that you have to put two layers on of foundation because its not full coverage. Its also very affordable so its GREAT !

It is so hard to find the right foundation for darker skins! I’ve almost just given up and simply use my BB Cream which costs me nearly R400 (with a powder if necessary) because I find that works better than any of the foundations I have ever tried. The Revlon ColorStay was the worst! I didn’t like the finish…it was far too matte for my liking. Perhaps I should sample an Estee Lauder or a Clinique or Chanel…Dior or Lancôme. Because drug store foundations really have not done it for me at all. This is a real battle.

I still cannot find the perfect shade. It is so hard to find one. I have two foundations that are close to my skin colour but are just not good enough. I mix the two and that helps.

Getting the right colour is the most difficult part, I think the in store assistants or promoters should also be trained to help customers find the right colour match, because often they get it wrong.

I tried MAC and they could not find the right colour for me. I have read and heard good things about the Revlon Colourstay foundation and the Rimmel Lasting Finish foundations. I have read that Bobbi Brown foundations match women of colour well. I’m keen to try.
