We all love summer, but not those super-hot days that see our make-up go running down our cheeks. After all, panda eyes will never be pretty (unless you are an actual panda, of course). Fortunately, if you’re smart about the formulations you choose, you can create a fully made-up face that can totally take the heat.
Make time to prime
Primer is similar to foundation in that it gives your make-up something to cling to, ensuring it lasts a little longer on your face. The best place to apply it is to your eyelids as when the temperatures rise, the crease is the first place that’s likely to oil up and cause your make-up to slip off. We like Benefit Stay Don’t Stray, R285, as well as MAC Prep + Prime Eye, R155. If you’re intent on using primer all over your face, look out for something like Smashbox Photo Finish foundation primer, R335, and smooth it on after your daily moisturiser.
Heavy, textured make-up can turn patchy-looking in the heat so consider swapping any thick foundations for a lighter-textured, tinted moisturiser like Almay Smart Shade make-up SPF 15, R145. You could also look out for light-textured, long-lasting foundations like Clarins Everlasting foundation SPF 15, R335. To keep your coverage in place, set it with a light, oil-free powder like MAC Blot Powder, R220. Because of its super-fine texture, you can reapply it throughout the day without worrying about it clumping up. Another goodie? Oil blotting sheets like Cettua Oil Control Tissues, R29.99.
Get clever with colour
Instead of adding colour to your cheeks and lips with powder blush or lipstick, look out for a handy, long-wearing lip stain that you can use to colour both. We like Benefit Benetint, R313, as well as Max Factor Lipfinity lip tint, R129.99. Once they’re on, they won’t budge.
Eyes that last forever
Ensure your eye make-up goes the distance by choosing formulas that promise to stick around, something like Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow, R255. It glides on easily with either your finger or a brush. Mascara-wise, pick a humidity-proof formula like Maybelline Volum’ Express One by One waterproof mascara, R109. It helps define each and every lash while adding a little bit of volume.
When it comes to lining your eyes, choose anything that promises water-resistant, smudge-proof wear, something like Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Gel CreamLiner, R160. This way you get your classic black eyeliner as well as two other shades that promise to complement your eyes.
