How to wear matte lipstick

Tuesday, 27 June 2017

Matte lipstick has become increasingly popular and it’s easy to see why. Whether you choose to go bold or neutral, it’s a fun and quick-fix way to change up your look. The antithesis to glossy lips, matte lippies have taken over Instagram and Pinterest boards, thanks to their opaque and almost chalky finish – also those lip kits popularised by a certain Jenner and Kardashian clan. To help get you started (and add to your collection) we share our favourite picks from liquid to traditional ‘bullet’ lipsticks, and tips on how to wear the matte trend.

Exfoliate much?

Matte lipstick looks great on, but it shows off every bit of your pout – and that includes the small piece of skin in the corner of your lip, compliments of winter. We’re all about exfoliating, so don’t neglect your lips when you’re giving your body a good scrub-up. We erm, love, the L.O.V Perfectitude Smoothing Lip Scrub, R134,95. You could also use good old brown sugar, but this is an indulgent lip smoother that contains mango butter and vitamin E. It’s advised to treat your lips every now and then, so go for a product like the L.OV. TrueMe Lip Treatment Oil, R189,95. Your softened pout will appreciate the much-needed TLC and you’ll be ready to flaunt your matte lips.

Stay hydrated

Lipsticks with matte finishes have a tendency make your lips feel dry, because they’re well, not glossy. Start with a few dabs of your favourite lip ice and do a regular treatment as noted above. The matte finish is totally worth it but you want to avoid that cakey feeling, so it’s best not to apply many layers. When reapplying, start fresh. The extra effort will be well worth it.

Line your lips

Matte lipstick is more pigmented than most regular lipsticks (score!) so ensure you line your pout to avoid the struggle of post-application cleanup. You could also use the liner to fill in your lips for long-lasting colour and precision. A bit of highlighter on your cupid’s bow will work wonders, and you’ll feel pretty confident after all the lip preparation you did. Bold matte colours tend to make your lips look smaller -it’s for the best because of the “like wow” effect – so the highlighter trick will help add volume. Up the glam factor and apply a bit of highlighter to the middle of the lower lip once you’ve applied your desired hue.

Time to get shady

Once your lips are smooth and delicious-looking, it’s time to choose your shade. Beauties who love the natural finish opt for neutral tones that give that laid-back look while still looking primped. This is a favourite among celebrities like Kylie and Kim Kardashian. Those who like to make a statement go for bold mattes, because they pop even more than their glossy counterparts. Try a matte shade in this season’s trendiest colours and you’re ready for any occasion. Matte lipsticks need minimal make-up as they make enough of a statement on their own, so that’s an added bonus on days when you’re pressed for time but still want to look fierce. Choose from our selection of shades to seriously update your look.

Matte shades to try:

1) MAC in Forbidden Sunrise creamy orange, R240

2) Yardley Liquid Matte in Killer Pink, R119,95 (A favourite around the office – and lasts super long)

3) NYX Matte Lipstick in Shy,  R125

4) L.O.V Matte Lip Affair in Saneia’s Fushia, R120

5) Inglot Matte Lip Tint in shade 33, R499

10) L’Oréal Paris Matte Color Riche in Haute Rouge,  R179,95

So, are you ready to switch it up or are you sticking to traditional lipstick? The new matte ranges offer formulations that ensure your lips don’t feel dry like the Sahara – because that’s anything but glam. So we’re more inclined to wear it. If you’re worried about the dry factor,  Matties like Mii Cosmetics Passion Matte offer a shinier suede-soft finish that’s anything but cakey. Our BSA beauties seem to love the essence matt matt matt range, so it could be a good starting point for newbies. Here’s hoping our selection of shades will bring you some matte happiness. I love lipstick, it just does something for my face :-), I’m not brand conscious so I’ll go with anything in any price range if it’s good. My problem with using lip liners is that not all the shades come with liners and ideally they should.

After I started using matte lipsticks I just can’t seem to get back to the normal lipsticks that I used to use. I apply it once in the morning and only have to reapply or touch up much later in the day!

I only wear Matte lipsticks and I love the variety that Yardley has. I also love how long they last and they don’t dry out my lips.

My preference is matte lipsticks only. Long lasting wear, no bleeding over the lips and no smudges. Revlon Matte long lasting lipsticks have a great variety of shades.

The Yardley lip vinyl and Essence Matt Matt Matt ones are so far the only ones my lips love. I do all the preparation i.e. exfoliating, lip liner etc. but no luck, lips don’t like it, sadly.

I love Matt lipsticks! I love nudes and browns and the fact that it lasts for hours. Sorry if I’m overreacting but it lasts the whole day, thankfully. I just do my make up and enjoy every moment in the mirror and I apply my matte lipstick and it just stays on – where other lipsticks come off and rubs off on clothing and when eating etc. In this case I would say that you save money because the product lasts longer and that’s a win! ♡ForTheLoveOfMakeUp #MyOpinion
