Matte lipstick has become increasingly popular and it’s easy to see why. Whether you choose to go bold or neutral, it’s a fun and quick-fix way to update your look. The antithesis to glossy lips, matte lippies have taken over Instagram and Pinterest boards, thanks to their opaque and almost chalky finish – also those lip kits popularised by a certain Jenner and Kardashian clan. To help get you started (or add to your collection) we share our favourite picks from liquid to traditional ‘bullet’ lipsticks, and provide tips on how to wear the matte trend.
Matte lipstick looks great on, but it shows off every bit of your pout – and that includes the small piece of skin in the corner of your lip. Nice one, winter lips.We erm, love, the L.O.V Perfectitude Smoothing Lip Scrub, R134,95. You could also use good old brown sugar, but this is an indulgent lip smoother that contains mango butter and vitamin E. It’s advised to treat your lips every now and then, so go for a product like the L.OV. TrueMe Lip Treatment Oil, R189,95. Your softened pout will appreciate the much-needed TLC and you’ll be ready to flaunt your matte lips.
Lipsticks with matte finishes have a tendency make your lips feel dry because they’re, well, not glossy. Start with a few dabs of your favourite lip ice and do a regular treatment as noted above. The matte finish is totally worth it but you want to avoid that cakey feeling, so it’s best not to apply many layers. When reapplying, start fresh. The extra effort will be well worth it.
Line your lips
Matte lipstick is more pigmented than most regular lipsticks (score!) so ensure you line your pout to avoid the struggle of post-application cleanup. You could also use the liner to fill in your lips for long-lasting colour and precision. A bit of highlighter on your cupid’s bow will work wonders, and you’ll feel pretty confident after all the lip preparation you did. Matte colours tend to make your lips look smaller -it’s for the best because of the “like wow” effect – so the highlighter trick will help add volume. Up the glam factor and apply a bit of highlighter to the middle of the lower lip once you’ve applied your desired hue.
Time to get shady
Once your lips are smooth and delicious-looking, it’s time to choose your shade. Beauties who love the natural finish opt for neutral tones that give that laid-back effect while still looking primped. This is a favourite among celebrities like Kylie and Kim Kardashian. Those who like to make a statement, go for bold mattes because they pop even more than their glossy counterparts. Try a matte shade in this season’s trendiest colours and you’re ready for any occasion.
Matte lipsticks need minimal make-up as they make enough of a statement on their own, so that’s an added bonus on days when you’re pressed for time but still want to look fierce.
