Just in time for Mother’s Day we asked former Miss South Africa Jo-Ann Strauss to share a few lessons her mom taught her about life and beauty.
What are the happiest memories you have of your mom?
So many – I remember her and I sewing my ballet costumes together for the first ballet I’d choreographed at around 8 or 9 years of age. I also remember my mom skipping 100 jumps in one minute at a shopping center competition to win me my first ever international designer fragrance when I was 13. She is the best mom who would do anything for me and vice versa.
Any important lessons you’ve learnt from her?
She always says to me, “Don’t just be yourself, be your best self.” I’ve lived by this mantra and am grateful to her for teaching me this. She’s taught me about perseverance and about working hard for what you want and never asking for a hand-out. Entitlement kills the spirit of entrepreneurship and she’s taught me that if you want something, it’s up to you to make it happen.
What else has she taught you?
How to walk in heels ;-) She’s taught me many lessons, some I only realise when I land up in a situation that she surreptitiously prepared me for. She’s trying to teach me to be a domestic goddess and a perfect wife – I’m having to sign up for extra lessons on the domestic goddess class as I didn’t spend enough time watching her cook as a child!
And the biggest beauty no-no?
She’s been very strict on never sleeping with make-up on. Once, I landed up in hospital after a TV shoot and I woke up to her cleansing and toning my face!
If you had to take a trip down memory lane and visit your mom’s make-up drawer / case again, what is the one product you remember always playing around with?
The lipstick! And she has stains on some of her favourite garments to prove that. She still holds on to them as she’s just as sentimental as I am.
Tell us a beauty myth your mom used to scare you with (that you now know is not really true)?
There weren’t really any –everything she told me was true! Although, I’ve figured out the tooth fairy doesn’t exist and she promised me she did!
