We asked local beauty Liezel van der Westhuizen to share a few lessons her mom taught her about life and beauty.
What are your happiest memories you have of your mom?
I have so many memories. My mom is such an adventure junkie so I have great memories of her finishing a variety of road races and hiking adventures. My mom, Charmaine, holds a very special place in my heart. She’s my roll model, my best friend and most importantly my mom.
Any important lessons you’ve learnt her?
I get my zest from life from my mom, as she is not scared of adventure, or change or challenges. She’s taught me that there is no such word as can’t.
What else has she taught you?
Use a moisturizer with a sunscreen. That way you’ll always be protected from the sun.
And the biggest beauty no-no?
My mom doesn’t live by this but I do it often – going to bed with my make-up. It drives my mother crazy.
How do you and your mom relax and pamper yourselves?
My mom and I make a date at least once every six months to do a spa day together.
And Mothers Day?
I can’t be with my mom on Mothers Day, so I flew to Pretoria last weekend and surprised her. We enjoyed breakfast and the day together.
If you had to take a trip down memory lane and visit your mom’s make-up drawer/case again, what is the one product you remember always playing around with?
I remember playing with her perfume; she always wears perfume from the Estée Lauder range.
Tell us a beauty myth your mom used to scare you with; that you now know is not really true?
My mom always said eating chocolate would cause my skin to break out.
