Mousse off!

Tuesday, 26 May 2015

What makes a mousse foundation different to liquid and powder formulations? Primarily, it’s all about texture. Mousse foundations are ultra soft and velvety, kind of like the texture you get when you beat egg whites (hence, the name “mousse”). They offer light coverage and, depending on how they were formulated, can give a dewy glow too. Best of all, they’re designed to feel invisible on the skin.

With so many brands bringing out their version of the mousse foundation, we decided to put two of the most popular ones to the test. Here’s what the BSA team thought:

Product: essence Soft Touch Mousse Make-Up
Price: R69.95
Reviewer: Anien (BSA Content Editor)

First impressions: I love the glass packaging and the pot container – convenient and easy to take anywhere with you.
Texture: This must be the softest foundation I have ever used! It literally feels like foam on your skin and is completely weightless.
Coverage: It offers light coverage, so if you’re into something heavier you’ll either have to blend in more layers or opt for a liquid formulation.
Blend-able? Yes, totally! Blends in quickly and easily with a foundation sponge.
How does it feel on the skin? It feels completely invisible – I can’t even feel that I have anything on my skin. When I apply it, it’s very smooth and foamy.
Does it last well? It lasts a full day at the office, and a couple of hours beyond that too. If I was going to a function after work I would probably re-apply it.
How do you apply it? I use my Beauty Blender sponge, as I find that works best.
Final thoughts: I am amazed that such an affordable product can deliver such incredible results. My skin feels like I have no make-up on, and the finish is completely even. Plus I love that essence now has this product available in porcelain and very dark shades too, thereby really catering for everybody.

Product: Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse
Price: R140
Reviewer: Lauren (BSA Social Media Manager)

First impressions: I like the good quality packaging. It is small enough to pop into your handbag for when you are on the go, which is every girl’s dream.
Texture: It is extremely light. I love the way that it has an air-soft feel to it.
Coverage: It provides a very even, matte coverage. I love that it has a soft, weightless feel and is light enough that it does not cake.
Blend-able? This light mousse blends effortlessly, allowing you to achieve natural-looking coverage. I love that the coverage is light enough that you can build up your make-up to achieve the coverage that you want.
How does it feel on the skin? It feels like a dream. It is very light, which allows your skin to breathe while looking flawless.
Does it last well: It is quite long lasting. It lasts for up to 8 hours, thereafter you will need to touch-up.
How do you apply it: I apply a small amount and blend it in thoroughly with a flat foundation sponge. I love that it is light enough for you to layer more if necessary.
Final thoughts: I am quite a fan of this foundation. It is light, soft and weightless. I love the fresh smell it has and that it is well priced. I will definitely repurchase it.

I use the Maybelline version and totally love it! But if there is a more economical option that does the same job…well I guess that I should give it a try. I also feel that the mousse requires less work when applying.

I would have loved to hear why I should purchase an essence mousse instead of Maybelline, and vice versa. The title of this article is misleading. I would have also preferred if the same person reviewed both products. In my opinion, this article didn’t tell me anything that I could of read on the label or seen on adverts…

It would have been more comparative if the same person reviewed both the foundations. It also would be nice to know what type of finish (dewy or matte) the foundations gave to the skin and what type of skin the reviewers had (oily or dry).

I’ve used both and find them to be suitable for younger oily skin. My skin is dry, and these made me look ashen and dehydrated.

I prefer full coverage, I’m happy to see that Essence’s quality is just as good as a big name like Maybelline :)
