Nourishing lip products for the colder months

Nourishing lip products for the colder months 1

It’s time to tackle winter lips! Dry skin affects the best of us due to all the climate changes at play. Luckily you don’t have to alter your beauty routine completely. Try these products and kiss cracked lips goodbye.

Exfoliate away

Exfoliating is a refreshing treat for the skin and it’s even more important during winter, so don’t forget about your lips when giving your body that added dose of TLC. It’s important to remove the old, scuffed-up skin and whether you choose to DIY or buy a store-bought scrub, your lips will no doubt appreciate the new lease on life.

DIY scrub: Simply mix a spoon of honey with some brown sugar and exfoliate away.

You could also try Lipscuff from The Body Shop, R134,95. It’s a nourishing, well, lip scuff, that smooths, refines and moisturises.

The L.O.V PERFECTitude Smoothing Lip Scrub, R134,95, with regenerating sugar crystals and mango butter also works well to remove old skin and replenishes moisture.

There seems to be a mask for just about everything these days, but we were somehow still slightly surprised when the 3INA Lip Mask, R89,99, was dropped on our beauty desk. We love that the mask was cheekily shaped in the form of pouty lips. It smelled pretty great too!

Treat

Sometimes the cold weather sets in and simple, everyday lip products just don’t help.

When Vicks just won’t do, try a good moisturising product – and with the slew of brands on the market, don’t forget the many purposes of good old Vaseline! Lock in moisture, hydrate your skin and protect from external causes of dry skin with this old faithful product. We were thankful when the tiny little tub was introduced. Now we can cart it around everywhere and it fits in even the smallest handbag!

The most important factor is to replenish what is lost in winter. And to make matters worse, our lips also lose some of that plump goodness that we appreciate in the warmer months. Try the Gatineau Defilift 3D Perfect Design Revolumising Lip Care, R405. It works to add long-lasting volume, and it’s a cosmetic alternative to filling techniques that helps to plump and soften lips.

For instant results, Physicians Formula Plump Potion R189,95, promises a plumping effect in 60 seconds. Enjoy the hydrating and smoothing effects, along with fuller lips despite the winter cold.

BioNike Proxera LipoGel, R79,95, is great for sensitive skin and contains a formulation of waxes, butters and emollients that work to restructure and nourish lips.

Double duty

Because prevention is better than cure, why not try a lipstick that does double-duty? We often just look for a certain brand or on-trend colour, but you might want to invest in a lippie that moisturises while it prettifies.

L.O.V Absolute Me Nourishing Lip Balm Stick, R169,95, has a pampering texture that contains monoi butter, argan oil, cocoa butter, peach kernel oil and Shea butter.

Palladio Butter Me Up Lip Balm, R95, tinted lip balm is a luscious, buttery lip balm that moisturises, protects, and soothes lips.

Drench your lips in beautiful, rich colour and intense moisture with Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick, R109,95.

Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick, R294, is a firm favourite and offers up to six hours of non-stop moisture. Enriched with mango oil, Joli Rouge comforts, conditions and nourishes. The creamy formula deposits intense colour and a delicate satin sheen to lips.

Yardley Supermoist Plus Lipstick, R109,95, with SPF20, has a soft-touch lip formula enriched with Shea butter that works to protect lips from harsh weather conditions and keeps them soft and supple. Not compromising on colour or shine, you can choose from a variety of shades and matte and gloss textures.

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Ultra Lipstick, R295 is a luxurious moisturising lipstick that hydrates and helps strengthen your skin’s appearance to hold vital skin-plumping moisture within the skin.

Tinted lip balm and oils FTW

Nourishing lip products for the colder months 5

For days when you want to give your lips a break from lipstick, a good balm or lip oil can be seriously nourishing. Luckily we’re spoiled for choice with these moisturising, deliciously scented balms that just so happen to look great too.

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil, R295, gives you glossy lips without the stickiness. It’s a lip care treatment infused with the power of plant oils that nourish your lips.

The Wet ‘n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain, R59,95, is a balm stain that glides on smoothly while conditioning your lips. Enriched with acai and palm oil, it feels pretty great too!

You can’t go wrong with Eucerin Intensive Lip Balm, R67,95. It offers instant, intensive care for dry and even extremely dry lips. It works to reduce redness and calms irritation, with evening primrose oil.

Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector, R265 is part make-up and part skincare. It contains acacia micro-pearls and vegetable waxes that nourish, protect, soften and plump lips. Wear it on its own or add on top of your lipstick for ultra shiny lips.

Kiehl’s, R105, is a lip balm that protects and helps relieve chapped lips. Shield your lips from the elements with this protective balm. It is formulated with soothing emollients and sweet almond oil, as well as Vitamins A and E.

L.O.V soothing lip balm, R189,95, offers a coral pink glow, transparent shine and moisture thanks to the added Cherry kernel oil, milk protein and Shea Butter.

Of course, a good treatment goes a long way too, so do your best to take extra care of your pout during the colder months.

Top tips!

* Try not to lick your lips. It may seem like a quick-fix when lips are dry, but it dries it even more. Saliva contains acids that break down food, but it’s too harsh on your lips.
* Don’t pick at the dry skin on your lips. Use a lip balm or gently exfoliate instead.
* Apply a balm before cleansing your face. Your cleanser could be drying out your lips!
* Go for products that include Shea butter, vitamins and classic oils like coconut oil and argan and almond oil. Drugstore finds like Labello, Lip Ice and the handbag must-have, Maybelline Babylips work really well too.

  2. I love using Vaseline on my lips and feet in winter, keeps my skin so soft and my lips never crack.
