This week we bid farewell to the musical legend that was David Bowie. Enigmatic and sometimes outlandish, David was a pioneer in the art of reinvention. From the “boy next door” persona when he was young and just starting out, to the androgynous Ziggy Stardust and the Japanese costumes he wore later on, David knew the importance of keeping up with the times, and famously described himself as an artist “who tries to capture the rate of change.”
Nothing was too over-the-top for the man who once dreamed of being a visual artist, and who was trained in mime and make-up. He normalised the abnormal, making it possible for young fans to go all out with their hair and make-up and to express themselves through the way they looked. Glam rock wouldn’t have been the same without him!
