We’re gearing up for the silly season and who wouldn’t want soft, smooth totally kissable lips? Here’s how you can pay a little lip service.
First things first…exfoliate
Kick dead skin cells to the curb and say hello to super-soft lips with a gentle exfoliation. This gets the blood flowing, which in turn plumps them up too – BONUS!
Do not use your regular facial exfoliant – it’s most likely too harsh for the delicate lip area. Instead apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly, then use a soft toothbrush to gently rub off dead skin, then gently rub off with a warm cloth. Do we even have to say to use a spare toothbrush – toothpaste belongs on teeth.
You can also make DIY scrub by making a paste of sugar and a bit of olive oil. Apply the mixture with circular motions to your lips then rinse with warm water and pat dry.
…and then protect
Keeping your pout chap-free is easy. You can go the natural route by using coconut oil. It’s good for healing dry, cracked lips. Just rub a little on your lips in the morning and evening for smoother lips. Alternatively, lock in your lip’s natural moisture daily while protecting and caring for them with balms.
We’ve always loved Labello, so we’re hooked on their new on-trend tint Blackberry Shine Lip Balm, R21, 99. Other favourites include essence balmy kiss moisturizing lip care, R24, 95, which contains pampering almond oil to ensure wonderfully soft lips with a touch of colour. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour® Cream Intensive Lip Repair Balm, R245, has long-lasting moisture that immediately soothes and helps strengthen your lips’ delicate moisture barrier, perfect if you’re looking for all-day coverage. Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1, R105, contains key ingredients like Aloe Vera and Vitamin E to relieve cracked and chapped lips – which makes this product a worthwhile investment. Finally, if you’re looking to splurge, look no further than Clarins’ Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil, R295. This feels more like a lipgloss and it gives your lips a treatment infused with essential plant oils to nourish and enhance your lips’ natural beauty. What we love even more about this oil is that I’ll give you just as good coverage even when worn over lipstick.
Remember beauties, your lips are an extension of your body. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated, and protect your lips from the sun by wearing a good SPF – it goes without saying they’ll benefit too. And stop chewing your lip! You could be creating tiny tears, which will probably lead to infection.
