We caught up with senior make-up artist for MAC cosmetics, Michelle Lee Collins. Here she gives us her must-have products and summer looks for 2012.
1. Describe yourself in one sentence.
A playful yet driven creative.
2. When did you know you wanted to be a make-up artist and how did you go about accomplishing your dream?
I was 17 when it dawned on me that my obsession with fashion and art needed to be my career. I enrolled at a varsity to complete an Art Directing Diploma. I always knew though that I wanted to be a MAC girl. I joined the MAC team in Cavendish as an associate with a clear objective: I wanted to be a part of the MAC backstage team. A year later I was a resident trainer and on my way to making my dream a reality. With a tremendous amount of hard work and immense passion for the brand, five years later the job I dreamt of is now my reality every day as the Senior Artist for MAC Cosmetics, South Africa.
3. What are the challenges (if any) of being in the industry?
I can’t say I have encountered challenges; MAC has been my career guardian angel.
4. Whose face are you itching to get your hands on, and why?
Nicky Minaj; this is a strong woman who is making waves in the male-dominated industry of hip hop with her risqué approach to style but most importantly her sense of social responsibility. 2012 will see Nicky Minaj and Ricky Martin as the new faces for the MAC VIVA GLAM campaign; look out for the amazing visuals and products coming out in March 2012.
5. What are your favourite beauty products?
MAC Prep and Prime Skin Fortified Skin Enhancer SPF35 Recharge. This is a power-house product that assists with hydration, oil control and illumination and can be worn under foundation to boost dull complexions or on its own as a light tint. It’s my make-up addiction right now!
I also love MAC Prep and Prime Brightening Serum – it’s magic for clarifying dull complexions and fighting the signs of ageing by pumping the skin with hydration with Super–Duo Charged water that activates the skin for improved hydration. Hydrated skin appears more plumped, youthful.
6. What is your must have make-up item from MAC?
MAC Brushes – I am nothing without my tools! Brush #217 is my ultimate; you can use this brush for blending out your eye shadows flawlessly, applying concealer or powdering.
7. Tell us about your summer make-up trends for 2012.
The trend we call Modernist is a nod to the 60’s obsession with maximum lash. Masses of carbon black mascara top and bottom. MAC Zoom Fast black mascara is the perfect product to achieve this look.
Disco Tech is the ultimate holiday trend: glitters, neons, statement liners and liquid Metalics. There is no limitation to how fabulous you can look. MAC Crush Metal pigments from our Glitter and Ice Holiday kits teamed with a bright lip, MAC Impassioned Lipstick/Goes and Goes MAC Pro longwear Lipsticks are an easy way to pull this look off.
The Terracopper Trend is another favourite of mine; think bronzed goddesses ready for drinks at Caprice: contoured and highlighted skin with flashes of gold, bronze and copper across the lids and cheeks. MAC Give Me Sun Mineralize Bronzer and MAC Cream Colour Bases are Terracopper essentials.
8. How does the VIVA glam range work with regards to raising funds for AIDS?
100% of the selling price of all Viva Glam lipsticks and lip glasses goes directly to men, women and children affected or infected by HIV and Aids. We have a striking collection of 8 lipsticks and 3 lip glasses that have raised over $230 million since 1994.
The purchase of a single lipstick will feed two children living in an orphanage in South Africa, two meals a day for one month. The impact of a sale of a Viva Glam lipstick is life altering to the thousands of South Africans living with this disease.
Viva Glam is the heart and soul of MAC Cosmetics!
