It’s that time of the year again when fashion’s elite don their most outrageous and jaw-dropping ensembles and hit the red carpet at the Met Gala. The event sets a theme based on the upcoming exhibition that will feature at the prestigious New York gallery, and this year, the event honoured Commes de Garcons, a fashion label headed by designer Rei Kawakubo. Rihanna stayed true to the theme and wore a show-stopping Comme des Garcons creation encased in petals, and worked it in true BadGal RiRi style. While other celebs may not have taken heed of the designer theme, they stayed true to the designer’s affinity to be bold with their beauty looks. These looks will no doubt filter through the beauty-sphere and we’re already inspired to try them!
Top trends of the night
Our very own Candice Swanepoel rocked the clear favourite beauty trend of the night: statement eyes. The gorgeous model strutted her stuff in a classic gown and finished off the look with a cat eye that we can only dream of achieving, topped with a sleek high pony. The classic cat eye may not be a new trend, but when executed well, it has instant glam effects – noted by the many celebs who flaunted it on the night.
Rihanna was pretty and playful in her 80’s-inspired make-up and we’re here for it. We may not be ready to pull it off, but it certainly stole the show!
Kendall Jenner showed off a leggy ensemble and perfect make-up. The beauty opted for a bold lip and flawless, dewy complexion. The lippy we can’t get enough of? Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick, in ‘Restless’.
Natural hair FTW
True to form, Zendaya brought us #BlackGirlMagic at its best with her soft fro and a bold orange lip, to complement her Dolce & Gabbana ball gown. Natural beauty looks have been all about a fresh glow, full, kept brows, and flaunting your natural hair in all its glory. Besides statement hairstyles, many opted to tie their hair in effortless buns and side-swept plaits, letting their gowns and make-up steal the spotlight. Zendaya, ever the fashion rebel did it all.
Selena Gomez proved the rising ‘sunset eyes’ trend is more wearable than we thought. She opted for a gorgeous pink hue to adorn her eyes, and kept the rest of her make-up simple. Sunset eyes is a good way to incorporate colour and brighten up even the gloomiest day. We love the pop of colour.
Lupita Nyong’o also embraced the colourful trend and went full-on unicorn with her rainbow eyelids. Perhaps not as wearable, but it certainly popped on the red carpet.
Platinum is the new black
Zoe Kravitz flaunted her new cropped do in this season’s hottest colour. Her platinum pixie complemented her cat eye and gorgeous gown in true punk princess fashion. Other celebs to rock platinum hair at the event include Kate Hudson, Kylie Jenner and Donatella Versace. Kylie uncharacteristically kept her make-up minimal and made a statement with her hair, quoting on Instagram, “When Donatella wants you to go blonde… you go BLONDE”. Dare to try it?
When all fails, accessorise
Cara Delevigne recently also went platinum blonde, before shaving her locks for an upcoming role. The beauty showed us all was not lost and opted to paint her head silver and accessorised with some diamanté. Fab and futuristic, or just plain foolish? This look was perhaps the most daring of them all, but we admire how well she pulled it off.
Rita Ora did the opposite and wore a headpiece that gave the illusion of having a super short cropped do. Overall, the major hair trend was low maintenance with some accessories thrown in. Other celebs like Brie Larson wore actual gold flakes in her hair, which we’ve seen on red carpets and awards shows alike.
