How to: Hide a bad hair day

No matter how much time you spend caring for your hair each day, a bad hair day every now and again is inevitable. Chances are it won’t only make you late for work, but it’ll put you in a bad mood too. Here, our top five tips on how to disguise it, fuss-free and in minimal time.

Plait it
Can’t get your hair to behave? A plait is the easiest way of taming it. To hide limp strands, too much volume or greasy roots, start plaiting from the nape of your neck, downwards – this style weighs the hair down and keeps it flat, so no one will notice the chaos beneath!

Bandana / headband / head scarf
This may be the most obvious way to hide your bad hair day, but it’s certainly also the most effective. Wrap a pretty headband around your head and secure at the nape of your neck, or pin your hair up in a bun and wrap a bandana / band around it. This is also a great way of hiding greasy roots or noticeable regrowth.

Messy bun
The beauty of a messy bun is just that – it’s messy. Simply scoop your hair up and tie it into a ponytail. Wrap your pony around the elastic and tuck the ends in. Don’t worry about pieces falling out or sticking out – the messier the hairstyle, the better. You might even want to pull a few strands out yourself to prevent it from looking too neat and tidy.

Wear a hat
With so many stylish hats on the market, it’s easy to find one that’s flattering and comfortable. Simply let your hair hang loose (or plait it if you prefer), and position the hat on your head. Your bad hair day is completely invisible! If your office has a casual dress code, you could even opt for a knitted hat or beanie in winter.

Blow-dry your hair upside down
Is your hair looking limp or flat? Lean over so that your hair hangs upside down, and blow dry it for a few minutes, paying particular attention to the roots. The combination of the heat and the wind will lift the roots, and when you turn it over, it’ll have a new lease on life.
Tip: Avoid heat damage by spritzing some Pantene Heat Defence Gloss Spray before you reach for your hairdryer.

  1. I never have a bad hair day (lucky me) but when it’s dirty and I haven’t had a chance to wash it, I just wear a beanie and do a side plait.
