We’re all about making sure you know what the latest trends are in the world of beauty. Whether it’s a look you can get on board with or a crazy fad that simply has you intrigued, here’s the lowdown…
At your next manicure appointment, take the plunge and go for glitter – the look is sparkly yet sophisticated, what’s not to love? We saw it on the spring 2017 runway at Desigual, and it’s a big Instagram trend. You can DIY at home too, try Essie Luxe Effects in Tassel Shaker, R129,95, or Wet n Wild Wild Shine Nail Color in Kaleidoscope, R27,95.
And if you really feel like pioneering a new look, ask for a wire manicure. Founded by a salon owner in South Korea, this nail art is created by bending a super thin gold wire into all kinds of shapes before placing them on nails with gel and sealing with a clear top coat.
Never forget: healthy, strong nails and cuticles will always be in fashion, so a dry oil like L’Occitane Nail & Cuticle Nourishing Oil, R250, is always a good bet.
Our verdict: We can’t wait to glitter bomb our nails, and we’ll keep the wire art simple but we’ll be sure to try it.
The shag 2.0
Everyone’s doing it. The hairstyle, that is. Chloe Grace Moretz, Taylor Swift, Amber Heard… these A-listers are reliving the ’70s with their new shags. If you’re rocking a LOB and you’re keen for a change, then chat to your hairstylist about upgrading to the Shag 2.0. It’s a little choppier, with layers that frame the face and a soft, split fringe. Also, bear the shape of your face in mind before you take the plunge.
Our verdict: It’s like a modern mullet, but we reckon some of us could pull it off.
All kinds of masks
Face masks will always be on trend, but it’s the type of mask that matters. Right now, these are the ones having their moment:
24k gold leaf: No longer just for fancy desserts, gold leaf is now adorning the faces of many celebs and all the Victoria’s Secret Angels. Apparently, it helps with anti-ageing, gives you a radiant glow and locks in moisture. Certain salons are offering this treatment (at a rather steep price), but you can attempt to DIY if you have the patience and delicate fingers to survive. Get the Theravine Ultravine Advance Rejuvenating Gold Collagen Film, R264.
Charcoal masks: Known for its purifying effects and ability to absorb toxins, charcoal is an ingredient you definitely want to be putting on your face. While a charcoal mask is certainly not as pretty as a 24k gold leaf mask, the results will be. Try The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Body Clay, R235.
Dry masks: These are “big news for 2017”, according to Harvey Nichols group commercial director, Daniela Rinaldi. It may seem strange to cover your face with dry fabric, but when you gently rub with your fingers, the essential ingredients are released.
Sheet masks: If you double tapped on all your favourite celebs sharing their Instagram snaps while prepping for the Golden Globes, you may have noticed that sheet masks are rather popular. You can find a sheet mask for almost any skin type or concern, but keep a lookout for sheet masks not just for the face, but for lips, eyes, feet, hands etc.
Our verdict: Bring on all the masks, we’re always game for skin saviours.
Nutella… in your hair
We never thought we’d need Nutella for anything other than sneaky spoonfuls every now and then, but who knew our favourite hazelnut spread is great for banishing brassy tones from blonde hair.
Our verdict: If you’re prepared to give it a bash, let us know how it goes. We’re keeping it strictly for sandwiches (and pancakes).
