For the last couple of months we’ve been harping on about protecting your skin against the sun. And we’ll keep harping. But not in this article. Why? Because everyone’s human and sometimes we do spend too much time in the sun. Life happens, and so does sun burn.
So what do you do when you wake up the next morning and your skin feels like it’s been cooking from the inside out? Unfortunately the only cure for sun burn is time. Your skin will begin to heal itself and after a few weeks you’ll be back to normal. But there are ways to alleviate the pain and discomfort that often comes with those lobster-red shoulders.
After sun is essentially a moisturiser that soothes, cools and calms your skin. It can prevent peeling as well, depending on how badly you’ve been burned. We’ve selected a few after sun soothers you should slip into your beach bag, just in case…
Cool, light and with a subtle fresh soapy scent, the Nivea Sun SOS After Sun Relief Lotion, R49.99, contains their active Hydra-IQ technology and Licochalcone to reduce redness and irritation while regulating moisture supply and distribution in the deeper layers of the epidermis. It looks and feels like regular body lotion so it spreads across skin smoothly and won’t agitate already stressed skin.
A combination between a lotion and a gel, Justine’s Ultrasun Skincare After-Sun Care, R170, looks like a lotion but spreads across your skin like a gel. A takes a little longer to absorb into the layers of your skin, but this just makes it extra cooling with its inoffensive scent.
From the heavy weights in the tan accelerator business, Bergasol’s Bronzage Passion After Sun Body Spray, R160, is a lightweight spray that is enriched with Aloe vera and has an amazing orange blossom scent. Simply spray it on and it absorbs within seconds – no need for rubbing and no sticky residue.
I’ve been using Tropitone’s Soothing Aftersun, R42.99, for years, so it’s a personal favourite of mine. It’s a gel spray, so you’ve got to rub it onto your skin for a smooth application. Even though it’s a gel, it’s non-greasy and is silky smooth with a refreshing scent I could never quite name. It takes a little longer than the rest of the after sun’s to absorb into your skin but it’s cooling effect lasts much longer.
